My kid's ES in FCPS has shown I think 6 movies before we even got to SOL time this year. These included Akeelah and the Bee, Inside Out (or two other choices that day), Sound of Music, Gone with the Wind, and several others that were more Disney-style. 6th grade. In past years I had a 2nd grader shown two full length Disney movies in ONE DAY. My 4th grader was shown the SAME movie in her regular homeroom and her adv. math class (two consecutive days). She was shown many more movies as well that year. That was also the year she spent 2+ hrs. playing computer games on school provided computers waiting for some classmates to finish their ecart tests (this happened more than once) -- my child finished in 30-40 min, but had to sit and do nothing but computer games for 2+ hrs. My other child's school adheres much more to the FCPS rules that there cannot be movies unless they have an educational purpose. They never have movies unless it is about Ancient Greece or Colonial kids or something like that. First child's school cuts corners. Second child's school does not. |
What? That makes no freakin sense. Start the same time, get rid of all the unnecessary breaks. Go to school full days the last week. End school. Allow teachers a week to get grades in and for graduations. Done. This is all just a mess and our crappy school board can seem to see past their 86% pay raise to straighten this mess out. These kids are in school to damn long. Starting early is not the solution. |

Um, no....
school is only 180ish days now. Needs to be around 210-220. |
| To those complaining about the movies: Has it occurred to you that there may be a reason other than doing nothing? The teacher may have requirements to test kids individually and that is a way to keep the class quiet and busy. She may have stacks of paperwork demanded by Gatehouse that needs to be completed by the end of the day. She may have all sorts of requirements about which you know nothing. She may also think that the kids have worked hard and need a reward. And, maybe, just maybe, she thinks the kids deserve just a little bit of fun. |

My 7th grader took a Latin final exam (two, actually) on the last day of school (LCPS). She also had a comprehensive Algebra 1 test (not the SOL) the next to last week of school. Other than that, the last two weeks are pretty much a waste of time.
It would be better if SOLs were moved to the next-to-last week, but I guess you can't accommodate all the tests that way. |
Why? For your convenience? No thanks. |
Some teachers/schools find a way to get their work done without resorting to movies. As previously posted, it is against FCPS rules to show movies unless there is an educational purpose. I don't have a problem when it is the very last week of school and they show no more than ONE movie per day. I do have a problem when they watch multiple movies throughout the year, multiple full length movies in one day and such laziness that they show the same movie twice in one week! Other teachers and schools find a way to keep the kids engaged without movies. |
| My second grader said with excitement that they're starting double digit multiplication this week. She still gets daily homework and I've seen them asked about it. My oldest didn't do that until 3rd. They also have a project due next week about the state of VA. No movies, although tomorrow is their class party. |
My school mandated the dates for our final exams: June 6th and 7th this year. We had 2.5 weeks from the date of the final until the last day of school. I wish parents or gatehouse would request that admin move finals to the end of school, because teachers fussing that it was too soon and kids were going to check out were ignored. It all revolves around SOL retakes

Where is this? That's too much. |
| So...based on all these responses, sounds like OP's school sucks OR OP is an ignorant troll. I'm going with option #2. |
More movies! Yesterday and today they watched "Home" and then they had another movie about space aliens who help a family with some problems on Earth (not sure of the name -- but it's an older movie). (I'm the PP being quoted above). |
And your child's school is? |
|
If I tell you, it will out me and that will not be good for my child. There are too many details here that would identify me.

Just tell us what pyramid. |
