At least in terms of Jackson's base boundaries, 32% go to Oakton and 68% go to Falls Church according to this FCPS document.
http://www.fcps.edu/fts/planning/sy2015-16schoolfeederlist.pdf When you adjust for the AAP students from Thoreau at Jackson, who are about 7% of the enrollment at Jackson and end up at Madison, Marshall and TJ, the percent who go to Oakton is about 29%, and the percent who go to Falls Church is about 63%. |
All the students living in the Town of Vienna go to either Thoreau or Kilmer, and then to Madison HS. People in other parts of Vienna and Oakton just live in unincorporated parts of Fairfax County. |
In either case, there is no right to attend the MS/HS in FCPS that is closest to your home, and it simply is not feasible given where the schools are located. People usually only imply otherwise if it means they end up in a school with "better" demographics. So, yes, there may be some people living in areas with Vienna zip codes that are closer to Thoreau than Jackson, but join the club. We were closer to two other high schools than the one we were assigned to when living in Vienna. We knew that when we paid for our home, which would have cost more had it been assigned to one of the two closer schools. |
You are telling me that 6 schools feed to LJMS and FCHS and account for 68%, and somehow Oakton, and not all of Oakton, and Mosby make up 30%? Someone's numbers are not adding up. 6 schools = 68% 1.5 schools = 30%??? |

NP:
If one resides north of 66, they are residing closer to Marshall Road/Thoreau or Oakton ES/Thoreau. If one resides south of 66, they are residing closer to Mosby Woods/Luther Jackson. If attending the closest neighborhood school is the idea - was mentioned above - then boundaries must shift. I am not sure how playing a numbers game is relevant. There are neighborhoods closer to Luther Jackson as compared to the current outlier schools. Perhaps moving those schools-since proximity was noted- would be the right thing to do. |
If you were to assume that all those schools were of equal size, 2/3 of Oakton and all of Mosby Woods would account for about 20% of Jackson, before the AAP students from Thoreau were factored in. But the schools aren't the same size. Mosby Woods has over 1000 students and is more than twice the size of the some of the schools that feed 100% into Falls Church. I assume that's why it ends up a 32% -68% split. Under any scenario it's significantly higher than 8% as was suggested in a PP. |
Other things being equal, it would be good to maximize the ability of students to walk to their assigned schools and to assign students to the schools closest to their homes. However, it simply is not feasible to do this for all students, given where the schools have been built. And, if it were to happen, Oakton HS would be more affected than most schools, as most of the students who currently go there live closer to other schools, particularly Chantilly, South Lakes, and Madison. If FCPS has tools at its disposal eventually that would enable it to map out what a county-wide redistricting would look like, assigning priority in the algorithm to minimizing the distance to schools for as many students as possible without overcrowding the schools, it would be interesting to see the results. Some people would like it, and many others would be unhappy. |
Stenwood Elementarykids go to Thoreau/Kilmer then Marshall. |
Stenwood students don't live in the Town of Vienna. Both Kilmer and Thoreau are split feeders to Madison and Marshall. FCPS could eliminate the split feeders by assigning all Thoreau students to Madison and all Kilmer students to Marshall, but that would require some Town of Vienna students to go to Marshall, and their parents want to stay at Madison. Some will claim they have a "right" to attend Madison, although there is no legal requirement to send all Town students to Madison and, in fact, part of the Town of Vienna went to Oakton until the mid-80s. |
Because it's a center school!!! That's why it larger. The center kids-about 79% come from Fairfax city an do not go to LJMS. Do again, explain the numbers, please! |
| If you take out the non MWES center kids, MWES is about 700 kids. |
| I'd like to see a breakdown of ES feeders to LJMS. Actual numbers! Forget aap/GE breakdown, just numbers. I've asked for this before and never got it. Wonder what the numbers are for real |
About 35% of the kids at the MW AAP center come from the two Fairfax City schools, not 79% http://www.fcps.edu/fts/dashboard/region1aaptransferin-out.pdf You should really send a FOIA request to FCPS if you want to understand exactly how FCPS came up with the 32-68% split. |
Actually, it would be closer to 790 students. MWES had 1022 kids in the fall of 2015, and there are about 230 AAP kids there from other schools. |
The base boundaries for Jackson include students coming from Camelot, Fairhill, Graham Road, Mosby Woods, Oakton, Pine Spring, Timber Lane, Westlawn, and Woodburn, Some are split feeders (Oakton and Timber Lane). The AAP center then picks up kids from other schools whose otherwise would be zoned for either Thoreau or Kilmer: Louise Archer, Cunningham Park, Flint Hill, Marshall Road and Vienna, along with the AAP kids from Oakton whose base school would be Thoreau rather than Jackson. If you want to look at the numbers for any or all of these schools as of last fall, they can be found at: http://www.fcps.edu/it/studentreporting/historical/pdfs/Ethnicity_Race_Gender/2015-16%20EthnicRaceGenderReport.pdf |
