Buy from a local butcher or farm.

We buy our meat at the Amish market. There are several in this area.
+1 I loved living in Silver Spring when the Amish market was right up Route 29. Now it is in Laurel. The meat was sooooooooooo fresh though!

I thought it was LA. Mildly funny--with the emphasis on mildly. I'd take a WF in CA over the WF in Clarendon any day of the week.

I shop at Whole Foods first thing in the morning - 8 am when there are no crowds. If I need something in the middle of the week, I typically go to Grosvenor Market (small but has what I need in a pinch) or Balducci's.

I try to stock up on meat and other staples so when I need something in a pinch it is usually a vegetable or fruit and I don't mind paying $1 more at the other stores to miss the crowds.

I don't do any shopping at Giant, Safeway or any of those types of stores. They are all dark, seem dirty, constantly have people in the isles restocking etc.. Just super annoying when I have very little time to get things done.

A few others have already mentioned it, but Aldi's is great for the basics. It's MUCH cheaper than any other store; generally about half of the Giant or Safeway prices. It's best for packaged staples: bread, cereal, granola bars, peanut butter, etc. But the produce is also generally decent and again, usually much cheaper. E.g., sweet potatoes can be 1/3 of the Giant price. They have been increasing their quality. For example, they used to only carry applesauce with added sugar, but now carry natural. And they just started taking credit cards. Just remember to take a quarter to rent the grocery cart.

I definitely didn't mean anything about poor or affluent! I am definitely not rich! We buy very little processed food so my main purchases are fruits and vegetables which seem to be close in price at most stores but better quality at Whole Foods or the smaller markets!

Hmart for different cuts of meats and sauces, whole foods for dairy/juice/fruits/cheese and misc snacks, wegmans for random stuff.

Where's a good place to get super fresh fish other than hmart?

MOM's cheap? haha I don't think so!
Last time I shopped there and bought a large head of organic cauliflower, it cost me over $9!! Insane.

We love Aldi. It doesn't have the best selection, but it has most of what you need. The savings there are real too. Probably about 40% cheaper than most other stores. Don't get the love for Wegman's.

I hate Safeway, as a rule.

PP who asked about Costco: yes, they have organic ground beef and chicken. Milk (though I don't like it) and eggs, butter, etc.

Not much organic produce, but some.
