What was your best summer vacation with elementary aged kids?

We go on lots of vacations. Big travelers. Kids have been to four continents.
Our best vacation was our "staycation" this year. It was interesting to see our kids imagination run wild when there was nothing planned for them. We even did a few local touristy things and it was awesome. How about just doing nothing and letting the kids entertain themselves? |

What does the "entertain themselves" philosophy even mean?
Give me an example of 1-2 of your days. We do days off in DC quite a bit. I was trying to plan a week's family vacation somewhere new where we'd get to see another part of the country. The kids haven't traveled as much as I have, and I would for them to get a chance to see how big and varied the world really is. |

| Assuming the above poster is op, and that you are looking for your kids to see/experience something different and have a $2500/wk budget, I suggest either: (1) camping in the Smoky Mountains, or (2) Boston for a few days and the. Cape Cod for a few days. You can drive to either place. Really depends on whether camping and a total outdoorsy vacation appeals to you, or if you prefer hotels and some culture/historical activities. |
