Are you going to refer? I was in your place -- kid did relatively poorly on NNAT yet is in top reading and math groups and pullouts at school -- and I had a WISC done back in December to see if AAP was something I should even be thinking about or whether I was delusional. Kid did well on WISC (97th percentile). She later got an in-pool COGAT score, but with the WISC in hand I would have referred as long as her COGAT was above 120. If I were you I would refer and plan to get a WISC later if an appeal is needed.

Thank you, PP. I do feel delusional. The kid does not test well. He's my oldest and I don't know how he really stacks up. He does a lot of things differently than other kids, but he's my kid, so of course I pay more attention to him and think he's great. I've been procrastinating on writing the referral, because of this. I have samples and jotted down thoughts, but ... yeah, I keep wondering if I'm delusional. We haven't had him take WISC or anything. In the end, I just want him to be in the best learning environment for him not his parents' egos.

New PP, why don't you just refer and see what his scores are (if they come after the deadline) and decide what to do? It sounds as though his teacher is supportive.. you may as well put some effort into trying. I personally would have called the school if we had not received our COGAT scores by now (we got them in Monday's mail).

I'm the PP. I get it. It's hard with a first kid. Mine is a second kid (first kid is in advanced math but not Level III or Level IV), and it is helpful to have a point of comparison. I would refer and let things take their course. This may be a case where the process will lead to the right decision.

Speculating here but maybe they want more referrals so that they will get more kids into AAP - after all, if you are not in pool and you don't refer then you are not going to get into AAP. If this gets the school 10 more referrals than it would have then perhaps it gets the school 1 or 2 more AAP kid.

Certain schools may want a few more AAP kids to justify how it operates its LLIV classes.

Thursday morning and we still don't have results yet; I really thought they would come home in the Wednesday folder, but no. I think I'm glad we had to do the referral without the results (NNAT not in pool) so we could focus on what we observe and not how good or bad the COGAT is. The AART stressed all year that we would not get results before referrals were due.

We just got ours in the Wednesday envelope. Alas, 119. Oh well, the referral packet is pretty much done, so we'll just roll the dice, but I don't think we'll appeal if the kid doesn't get in.

Have not asked the school. We get Thursday envelopes, so I'm assuming the scores will come home there tonight since I can't envision why else the scores would not have been mailed. If the school got the scores last Thursday, it may have been too quick of a turnaround to get them home that day in the envelopes. And if not, it doesn't matter at this point.

We get Thursday envelopes too, but the school sent the scores and pool letters via mail last Friday (I assume; they got to our house on Saturday).
