But I see that Montgomery Village is a cess pool of gangs, constant foreclosures, and primarily low income. Can someone tell me more about that or counter that info?

Well, it's your choice, OP. Either Ganglandia, or Bumfuckistan (I live in Bumfuckistan), or WealthyWhiteopia.

In plain english, where is Bumfuckistan?

Bcc, rockville, magruder, quince orchard all perform similarly.

Ha! So sad, but true.

We are in Ganglandia, though hoping to move to Bumfuckistan. Too poor for WealthyWhiteopia, unfortunately.

LOL. Why do you call it Bumfuckistan? I love the term, sounds perfect and I think of our choices we're looking to move into Bumfuckistan (based on high schools listed)

Because they are racist and dogging South Asians.

Strawberry Knoll and many (all?) of the neighborhoods that feed in are not in Montgomery Village. Close, but outside in 20879. We live here, and we like it just fine. Also we are not gang members. Or low income. Or a foreclosure.

MV resident here; I have lived here a long time and I wouldn't have stayed if it was the hell-hole that DCUM paints it to be. We've enjoyed the sense of community that MV provides; it's not unusual for me to see people that I know wherever I go. MV is no more crime-ridden than Germantown (I'd be willing to bet we have less crime -- Germantown has some awful areas, and there's nowhere in MV I'd be afraid to go). Gang activity? I can't recall anything gang-related in MV, but I can in Gaithersburg, miles away. My kids and their friends (who are of many different races and cultures) can bike and walk to one another's houses and to school; no way that would happen if there was any question about their safety. You can find kids playing outside and walking to the pools in the summer, and families enjoying the walking trails in the evenings after dinner -- does that sound like a place with a 'cess pool of gangs'? As for foreclosures, MV was as affected as any area; people paid outrageous prices, especially in many of the townhome communities. My own neighborhood has had very few foreclosures.

The really great thing about Montgomery Village is that there is no snobbery and no pretentiousness. In other words, it's not the place for many of the people on DCUM.

To the PP, do you mind listing what street/cross streets of MV you're on? I have seen a lot of Redfin listings for MV THs and we are interested, but I'd like to know more from someone who actually lives there and not someone who's just dissing on the place because they think they're community is better than everyone else.

Our list of importance is elem school, middle school, and high school can be a give or take because we may decide to go private.
We are looking to stay at least 5 years, as we believe that's how long it takes to build equity back into the purchase price of the home. We're looking for a community that is friendly for young children, and 1 or 2 working parent(s) because I may become a SAH for a brief period of time while DC is young. Things like tot lots and meet up group opportunities for the little one is essential. One reason we want to be in Germantown/Gaithersburg is because the closeness of 270 is attractive to DH and I for work commute. We don't want to be right in the hustle and bustle of city life, and we have a HHI of around 130. We're looking for a moderate to low priced TH under 350k unless brand new in which case we will make an exception up to 400k.

This comment is probably more appropriate for the real estate forum, but be careful with your 5 year plan. We had the same plan when we bought our townhouse in Germantown 10 years ago. We no longer live in it, but are totally underwater on it and will have to pay tens of thousands to get out of it. Real estate is unpredictable. It's a different market than it was 10 years ago and we definitely paid too much but it didn't seem that way at the time. Whatever/wherever you decide to buy--make sure you're ok with it for the long haul.

Have you looked in 20878--maybe townhouses that feed into Jones Lane ES--I think that's the area you're looking for.

Any attempt to pit Germantown against Gaithersburg is obvious trolling. Don't feed into it.

-istan is more of a Central Asian country-indicating suffix, I think. Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan -- in addition to Pakistan. But ok, which country-indicating suffix would you prefer for the Bumfuck part of the county (in which I live)?

I haven't yet but I will now as we search onward. Thanks for the advice and input. Do you have children there that you can speak about the teachers and academic performance?

Bumfuckistan poster, I want to be your friend! Your sense of humor is 100% in line with my general social circle.

Haha, thank you for that response, made me smile. What is Derwood? I assume Bumfuckistan. So I moved from Ganglandia (gaithersburg/MV area) to Bumfuckistan and am thrilled with school and community. As former resident of MV area, there are some really nice communities with excellent amenities (pools, farmers market, shopping, parks etc.) however NONE of them are affordable TH. All TH areas are high crime/low income and should be avoided.
