Seriously, has anyone outside of Virginia ever heard of JMU?

I guess it depends on what circles you run in. I am an academic and Goucher has a lot of respect and national recognition as a LAC.

If you are not from a certain state, would you really know the state schools in that state?
Most likely not.

Sure the rich loser kids from NY and NJ go to JMU when they can't get into Maryland.

Much more cache than saying your kid goes to SUNY Binghamton.

It's cachet, not cache.

You shouldn't be calling anyone a loser based on their education. Just sayin'...

For serious. I can think of a Pultizer prize winner who went to SUNY-Binghamton off the top of my head.

GMU is more popular and now more selective than jmu

+1 except this is the first I've ever heard of CNU.

never heard of them. Cut zero ice outside the state.

So is thread all about someone in MD or DC upset again that their in-state options and UDC are so meh compared to VA? I can't really think of another reason for the thread.

Christopher Newport is relatively new. I understand it opened in the 60's but it significantly expanded in the 90s (became a university, opened dorms, built new classrooms). Virginia population grew by about 25 percent between 1990 and 2010, so the state needed to expand the university system (much like the GMU) to provide enough space.

I grew up in Bethesda in the 1980s, and I went to private school in DC. I never heard of JMU until some of my HS friends did t get into UVA and had to go there.
I hadn't heard of Christopher Newport until very recently. I would consider it a massive fail if my child went there.
I've luved in Arlington for the past 15 years.
