I just stepped on a toad- can wildlife rescue centers help?

Aww, that's awesome you're going to volunteer.

FWIW, my 3yo and I found a big toad with two deformed legs. He was seemed to be making his way in the world just fine.

This is one of my favorite DCUM threads ever.

I think this is a bizarre thread.

OP, are you a vegetarian? If not, I'd love to know how you reconcile your concern for a toad even as you eat animal products that were raised in conditions that are nothing short of appalling.

'When Good Men Do Nothing, They Are No Longer Good'

The OP did what she thought was the right thing. Don't be a dick.

I considered cleaning it up for him but he gets very stressed whenever I even look into the terrarium or approach it, so I am leaving it there for right now.

I found a wildlife rescue center that will take him! Going to bring him there now- I hope they can make him a little brace for his legs

Awesome! Thank you for the updat .

You are a kind and compassionate person.

Next time, a good first resource is City Wildlife. It's DC's only urban wildlife rehab center. You can also call animal control - in DC, they are good people with a relationship with City Wildlife.

I had decided that I wanted to help getting him back out in the wild, or with taking care of him, since I was the one who caused it.

So I went out to my car, and seriously debated whether I should just drive away (like a normal person) or make an issue of it.

Eventually, I decided that I wanted to speak to them, and if necessary give it to a wildlife refuge where it wouldn't just be "assigned a number" and where I wouldn't told whether it lived or died for months.

I went in and politely asked them, and they asked me if I wanted to say goodbye. I said sure, and was working up the courage to tell them I wanted the toad back (so I could take it to the other animal hospital).

The toad handler lady came out and she said that actually it wasn't that hurt, that their plan would be to just release it into the wild with no care.

I questioned them to make sure, that they werent just telling me that.

Anyway, long story short, I drove two hours into a forest (there arent many in my area- I live in a western city) and found a quiet, woody area like they had described to me. I said my goodbyes to Toady and released him. He isn't hopping perfectly, but according to them it will be enough.

Also, as I was leaving, they told me that if I was so sentimental about this toad that I should volunteer to work at the animal rescue center. So I made an appointment and this Saturday I will be going in for training! So i guess there is a happy ending all around. I just hope Toady is alright and happy now.

Aw, I love this outcome!

+1 - OP took one compassionate step, which is likely to lead to other compassionate steps. It's hard to see the downside to this.

LOL!

Thanks for the visual! I have been reading this thread and feeling ridiculously hopeful for the world right now.

( I am also a toad lover and totally get this person. I have half buried terracotta pots in my front yard flower beds so that the two toads that live around my house have a safe place to call home. Google Toad house. There are so many ways you can create a nice little habitat for this toad.)
