+1. If David Clarke had not died, he would have been the mayor at some point. He was beloved! |
OMG! No doubt Clarke cared about the city, but Clarke was so far left he would make Bill DiBlasio seem like Reagan. |
+1. I am AA and I voted for him also - it was about schools for me and I liked his proactiveness on the issue. I totally agree with your last sentence as well. In poltical races between White and Blacks in big cities, Whites tend to play the race card with the calculated assumption that the White candidate is the better candidate. So if the Black candidate wins, Whites will say it is because Blacks voted race - but they will never admit that they do the same thing. As a aside, I think that fact that Catania is perceived as an asshole hurt him more than the fact that he is White or gay. |
VERY true. LOL! He was a White Liberal in a predominantly AA Liberal city. But look at it this way. He was loved all over the city because he was able to relate to whoever he was talking to - make them feel as if he was there for them. He had a gift that way. He was White and a lot of AA people voted for him. |

So voting for Bowser was about race, but you pushing for Catania because he is White & Gay is not? Your the idiots who voted out Vincent Gray; who is a arrogant butthole but ran the city fairly well
P.S. When was the last time Chicago had a Black mayor? How about Miami? How about Boston? But If I were to point that out, It would be deemed playing the "race card" |
And so you voting on race, and voting for a White Mayor would mean what for the city? He's going to magically fix things because of his white skin? I find it ironic people pushing not for a GREAT candidate but simply for a white mayor yet attack the black community for voting based on "race" LMAO. White people cant even see their own Hipporacy |
Get rid of Lanier. |
Not the person you responded to, but the entire premise of this thread is centered around Muriel's color. During the run up to the election, many on this board often brought up Muriel's race. Some are still doing it throughout this thread. I too voted for Catania, but don't fool yourself into thinking that many people in this city and on DCUM are thinking of race only and replacing the Blacks from top to bottom. |
And that he is a Republican in a Democratic city. If Catania had been the Democrat nominee, he would have won. That is, if one could cast aside his strident personality. |
Chicago has only had one Black mayor in the history of the city, and that was what, the early 80's. Miami and Boston has never had a Black mayor. NYC has had one Black mayor to my remembrance, Dinkins in the late 80's right. Your point is well taken PP, but the racists will continue to make excuses. |
May I respectfully ask, what country you believe you live in? Because the premise for your "examples" is faulty at best. Like it or not, you live in a majority-white country. And one that, incidentally, has already elected and re-elected a black President -- hopefully we'll see a Latino or Asian President too soon, to prove it's not all black or white. |

Just a question.....
Many of you are complaining about Bowser. Are you racist? I ask because those of us who complain about Obama and his lack of experience and questionable policies are called “racist” when we complain. |
Somebody's always going to get called something am I right? When Bush/Cheney were in office anyone questioned their policies and decisions were called "anti-American" for crying out loud. |
Seems that way. But, I will state. Simply because somebody disagrees with a politician who HAPPENS TO BE African American - does not make that person a racist. Those of us who disagree with Obama do so because of his policies. It has nothing to do with race. Are there people who dislike him because of his race? Of course. Just like there are some in DC who dislike Catania because of HIS race. |
Phil Mendelson is an unflashy, white, nerdy council chairman who sweats a lot of non-headline grabbing issues. Despite many candidates who have tried to knock him off (some of whom have used race-based dog whistles to do so), Phil has always run strong in virtually all areas of the city. He doesn't have Clarke's charisma, but people get that he works hard and cares about making Washington better. |
