Nearly 16 year old DD had all her hair cut off

She is probably gay and instead of telling you this is her message.

I did this, the summer between HS and college. It was definitely part of the big changes happening in my life, and feeling that I needed to both assert my independence and do something bold to take control/mark the transitions that were happening. Unfortunately for me, I could not pull the look off- I was hoping for Mia Farrow and looked like a 12 yr old boy instead. No big deal, I grew it out and moved on. I will always be envious of young, cute girls who can pull off a pixie cut. I really love the idea of it, just not on me.

To the naysayers who claim that teen girls simply don't get this hair cut these days, look at Tavi Gevinson's instagram (she is a teen and a fashion blogger, she runs rookie mag):

So silly. My DD is gay and has always loved her long hair. Your generalization is so dated.

I get a bug in my butt every 5 to 7 years and get a pixie. I'm way past the age of rebellion. Sometimes you just want a new look. My Grandmother used to dye her hair purple.

exactly! At your DD's age I dyed my hair jet black. No deeper reason, but just because I wanted to.

Your daughter sounds awesome.

I know! I wish I had enough confidence at 16 to cut my hair short

Given all of the changes that are happening, when she gets back home, you may want to solicit the support of a family counselor.

I trust you have a great relationship - but sometimes professionals are able to help in ways that busy parents can not.

It is hair...she didn't get a tat or anything permanent...ensure everything is good, and let her live her life.

No more activities, total restriction. School and home. Since its summer she won't leave the house until schools starts. No friends. I am an extreme person though.

Why would you do this? It's only hair, and it's her hair. I don't understand your strong feelings of control over someone else's hair.

Maybe because I'm 33 and my mother won't let me cut my hair more then 1.5 inches 3 times per year on November 1st, March 1st and July 1st. I have very long hair just once I'd like to cut it maybe 5 inches but I cant. Why should a child get to do something I cant. Yes I'm a bitter bitch.

But a pixie cut I'd flip out on her, the crazy in me would come out full on American psyco

Why are you letting your mother dictate your haircuts? You're 33. If you want to cut your hair, cut your hair. No need to be a bitter bitch.

She didn't get a piercing or tattoo, probably just wanted to try it and see what happened. A girl I knew dyed her hair a new color every 2 months for awhile. She evenually settled on a color!

Cutting hair drastically like this is nearly ALWAYS a sign of inner turmoil. Seriously.

As you said, she has had a lot of transitions, and 16 is not an age where you move gracefully away from all your friends and previous routine! I moved several times to different countries as a child, and the teen move was quite difficult.

Do you have a good relationship? Be extra watchful and nurturing for a while.

omg

Now we're diagnosing a teen by her haircut.

nothing better to do today?

It actually sounds very elegant and she will stand out here in this land of long haired women (right through to their 60s and 70s!)

Yep, cause it's probably not popular in either place. DC is not exactly fashion forward.

In fact you can. You are physically able. You just won't. There is a difference.
