Redshirting pressure from private school!

Is redshirting holding back one year or two? If it's just one, than 19:03's example was indeed redshirted.

Yes, but was it when this now college-aged child was attending? The cut-off was probably December 31 back then. So it sounds like redshirting.

14:55 The anecdote is about a high school senior. Like 15:24, I'm sure the cut-off was December 31 back then. Otherwise why would the poster have posted the anecdote. For instance, DCPS's cutoff date was December 31 until recently.

PP- you're right.

I'd bet that the reason why cut-off dates keep moving up is because schools want to have older kids who will compete favorably in athletics and compare well academically. I think I read about a state or school system with a late cutoff which was considering moving up their date because their kids are at a comparative disadvantage when applying to college against older kids from other districts or states. Consider it macro-level redshirting. In the midwest, one school district I'm familiar with has a June 1 cutoff, in part to create larger, better football players (football is big there).

Interesting. Of course that advantage will only last until the other school districts align their cut-off dates!

I know a child who was just asked to repeat K due to behavior issues that had a fall brithday. I don't think by holding them back is going to help the behavior. I also know another child who was just asked to repeat K who had a summer birthday who was already 6 before the school year started. IF they were in public school the first child would be going to 1st grade next year and the 2nd going to 2nd grade instead of them being in K again. What is up with private schools.

I've heard of this too, although more commonly with "summer birthday" children who weren't redshirted. I know of a few 7 year-olds in K.
