how do you ride in taxi with toddler

Anonymous
To answer the question, I bring my toddler into the taxi without a car seat. He sometimes sits on my lap. Sometimes next to me. I will wrap an arm around him to keep from from falling/sliding. We only use taxis in the city however, so we are going slowly. I don't really see the big deal here - I think there are many more dangerous things to avoid and having my toddler in a taxi on occasion (without a car seat) is not one of the major ones I worry about. I used to live in NY and did a lot of babysitting - would also bring my charges out in about in taxis (with parent's permission of course) and no one use to think this was strange.

School buses are different because of the way they are built. They are high profile, and flat on the sides, so they almost never role. For elementary school kids and up, the bus is the safest vehicle on the road.

Sorry, you were talking about regular buses, weren't you? I apologize. Those, I know nothing about.

I travel a great deal with my two- year old DD. I bought one of those compact 3-in-1 strollers. You can use it as a stroller, use it in an airplane as a seat and use it as a mobile car seat. When you want to convert it to a stroller you just pull the wheels out. I simply would not be without it when I travel.

I posed the question as a more general question since it is in "General Parenting"-- my post in Travel only got three responses. Anyway, we could take our carseat but I'm not sure they will take the time to let us install it... so I wanted to know the safest way to travel with no carseat (e.g., putting toddler in carrier and buckling up together-- maybe that is less safe I don't know). Anyway, thanks to the critical PP's for making feel like a piece of crap for even considering this. I'll just figure something out.

Don't have time to read through all of these idiotic posters, but we just recently traveled to India with out 22 month old. We brought our carseat along for our car, but there were some situations where we could not use a carseat because we were in CROWEDED public tranport. It was SCARY. I can tell you the driving in India is INSANE, people are all over the place and often driving down the wrong lane and animals are everywhere, including elephants and cows. We just held our breath and hoped that we all emerged alive. There is NO WAY that they would have allowed us to install a carset in the taxi and it would have been ridiculas to even try to lug one around the massivly crowded streets. It was a wild adventure and was a thrill the entire time.

Clearly this is a heated topic, but I definitly fall into the chill out a bit and take a look at the world around you category.

We lived in London and NYC when my son was a child and on the occassions when we took cabs (maybe once a month) we did not have a car seat. In London EVERYONE just rolls the stroller into the cab and in NYC people just buckle in and hold the child.

If this type of thing was really a problem don't you think we would hear news stories about it every day? Chill out people and OP just trust your gut.

I don't know anyone who doesn't own a car but owns a carseat. Do you? You don't see people just lugging around carseats outside of cars. In cities where people don't rely so much on cars, taking a short taxi ride without a car seat is a normal thing. I asked all my friends back home (NY) and none have car seats and they take taxis when public transportation is not practicable.

And I really don't see why taking a city bus without a car seat is any safer than taking a taxi.

Just curious how these people leave the hospital with baby. Hospitals everywhere require car seats when baby leaves.

What in the heck are you talking about? What does leaving the hospital with a baby have ANYTHING to do with this topic. Do you assume that everyone leaves the hospital with their newborn in a taxi or metrobus? Get a clue.

The problem with carseats and taxis is not that the taxi drivers won't let you install them. When I was traveling in NYC, I took my crseat with me. Taxi drivers were fine to let us install them, but the problem is that once you arrive at your destination, what are you supposed to do with a carseat? It was hellish trying to navigate the crowded streets and restaurants in NYC with a toddler and a huge carseat in tow. You certainly couldn't do it and sight see at the same time. I don't know what the solution is. Every other time I've traveled to NYC, I haven't taken my carseat along. It's just not practical. In NYC, they have car services that you can reserve ahead of time and you can request a carseat during the reservations.

When I traveled to the caribbeans, I took my carseat too (but did not rent a car). Their taxis did not have any seatbelts, so there was no way to install the carseat.

That doesnt answer my question. What do you put the child in when leaving the hospital if "none have carseats"? I didnt mention anything about using a car or taxi, I asked what they left the hospital with as you need a carseat to leave the hospital.

Quoted 10:33 PP here. There is no requirement that a baby be driven home. Hospitals everywhere require car seats only if you are putting baby in a private car. Certainly can't speak to everyone, but my sister walked the 5 blocks home with her baby in a stroller.

I lived in the city with my newborn and did not have a car. But we biught a car seat for the occassional times we went with other people (granma, etc) in their car.....did not use it for cabs, however.

logic will tell you that if you don't have a carseat you don't have a car. Maybe people take the bus and maybe they walk. Maybe they arrange to borrow a friends car and seat for the way home. Your question is still pointless to the topic.

Hospital and carseats. The nurse walked us out to the car. I assume they do that with everyone to see what type of transportation the new mom and baby are taking. If they walk off the hospital grounds with a stroller or whatever, the hospital is no longer liable. doesn't matter if they catch a cab up the street somewhere, carseat or not.
