Has everyone forgotten that car seats are fairly new? I'm in my 30s and we didn't have a car seat for a toddler back then. I was just talking to a woman with grandchildren the other day and she says she used to nurse her baby (35 years ago) in the car as a passenger, obviously not while driving, and doesn't know how moms today get anywhere without nursing their babies in a car!
I'm not saying it's not a good thing not to have car seats now, and there is more traffic in the road now, etc., I'm just saying, we love to act horrified at the thought of someone probably riding 2 miles in a taxi in stalled out city traffic moving 10 miles per hour in an emergency, yet, years ago, people didn't have the luxury of car seats. |
2 things we have done (not together) in other countries: We have a Sit n Stroll (stroller converts to a car seat) and a joey strap (a 5 point harnass that attaches to a seatbelt). Of course, many times there were not seat belts.... |
PP here who had traveled to the middle east. This joey strap sounds great! I've never heard of this. I'll have to check it out, thanks! |
I'm in my 30's as well and there were no carseats when I was a toddler however it is the law in 2009. What does 1975 have to do with today? |
OP,
Buckle yourself, put the child in your lap and pray. DON'T BUCKLE THE CHILD WITH YOU! NEVER! |
Right, you do realize the loose, unsecured child on a lap in a moving car becomes a projectile object that is thrown through the window with the force of a sumo wrestler? |
Ok, so you'll hold the car seat while I stroll around with my toddler? |
It's a question of safety vs. convenience. Can we all, always be safe with our children? No, but hopefully convenience is not the reason. |
My point is, as I thought was already stated if you read my post, people are acting like the posters who put toddlers in taxi cabs in a jam, once in a while, are bordering on child abuse. And I'm just pointing out, every once in a while in an emergency, it's not a big deal. Given that it used to be the norm, I don't see doing it in a rainstorm in they (where there is usually slow traffic) like one poster mentioned is that bad. |
Why have some PP suggested that the bus is a safer alternative? The bus is a huge, open space with no seat belts and the vehicle makes unpredictable stops. Seems contradictory to get so bent out of shape about a taxi ride and then suggest the bus. |
Seat belts aren't required on school buses. |
We've used this vest when traveling to NY etc. It's very light and takes up very little space in a bag. The kid can wear it while you hail the cab, and it just takes a couple of seconds to secure the seat belt once you're in. Our DC thinks it's fun (wants to use it all the time).

Then risk their life, I really don't care but it is a poor parenting decision. |
This is why DCUMs get a bad name! DS is 6 and we've never seen parents out for the day, say, on the Mall or strolling around the city and lugging heavy car seats with them. If my son suddenly gets sick or the weather turns bad, or metro suddenly develops huge back-ups, I'd put my son in a cab without a car seat.
And what do people do on metro? Train derailments happen and people have been injured. Ditto with buses (my son goes on a school bus every day with no seat belt). Car seats/boosters are great and we always use them when traveling (and of course in our vehicle), but good God, while somewhat risky, it's hardly abusive/dangerous to take a cab and not have a carseat. If I were a doctoral candidate in psychology, I'd love to do a study of DCUMs and see if they are more neurotic/rigid than counterparts in other cities or random moms in the area who don't frequent this forum |
No one said it was abusive, they said it was dangerous. |
