parents' endearing habits and quirks

My mom always say "hey Danielle, it's your mom" on voicemails as though I wouldn't recognize her voice or caller ID

My parents are gone but my good friend's dad writes her daily text messages in letter format.

Dear Larla,
Today Mum and I went to the Home Depot and bought some paint so your brother can paint the porch this summer when he comes to visit. They have so many paint colors at the Home Depot, although some of them are very expensive. We hope you are having a good day.

Love, Your Dad.

I think it's adorable.

This is so cute and funny. Made me LOL. Hugs to you, PP.

My dad: would pretend he was asleep after dinner, in front of the t.v., and surprise me with a headlock as I walked past.
So many "dadisms". Thanks for the post, OP.

My grandfather would do this! I'd think he was asleep watching the baseball game. And the TV reflected off his glasses, I would try to sneak past him and bam! It scared the hell out of me, but I laughed every time.

Mom always needs to get dressed up to go out anywhere . . . Target, Safeway, Denny's. Usually dress slacks, rarely a tshirt. A few times I've been able to talk her into wearing her "nice" jeans. I've never seen her wear shorts or sweatpants beyond the back yard. She's European.

My mom took her sick goldfish to the vet to be humanely euthanized.

My mom is very proud of her decorating style "things that I like" (said proudly and with your arm flung out) and covers every inch of her walls, mantle and shelving with them.
I have dedicated an entire long hallway in my house with "things that I like" and it is by far the best looking area of the house. And I do fling my arm out like she does when asked about it.

Ooh I love this. My friends dad does that to her on Facebook and all of our friends that we grew up immediately "like" his notes to her. He is a legend, and is probably clueless about why he gets 20-30 immediate "likes" on his posts to his daughter

Did they do it? How do they euthanize a small fish like that?

+1
My Dad would do this to me in college - shared answering machine..."Hello, this message is for {first name}{Last name} it's {first name} {last name}, your father....
Hilarious, as he's a totally informal guy..signs his cards to us with his full name, too..

I'd think up something about my mom - but I am becoming her in so many ways...

My parents also say "dungarees" and "pocketbook."

my dad calls pants trousers

He is very vocal about his opinion that everyone should tuck in their shirts and is often commenting that someone 'needs a haircut.'

My mom answers my calls saying "hello (first name) (last name)"! Yes, she calls me by my full (maiden) name every time she answers the phone, after seeing my number come up on her phone.

My MIL, like a PP said about her mom, knows all the details of everyone's lives (neighbors, friends, family, the mailman, etc.) and likes to tell us all about everyone when we visit. Often, when she's going on and on telling us all about someone, my FIL will just let out this long sigh.

My in-laws are not big eaters. If you ask them what they want for dinner, they'll say 'dinner? Oh, I can't eat dinner! I just had lunch!" (when lunch was 6 hours earlier) but they also both love sweets and it's not uncommon to come upon them in the middle of the day having a bowl of ice cream or some cookies and milk and then later saying they're too full to eat an actual meal. If my husband and I have an appetizer, they'll think that's supposed to be the whole meal. For example, we had some cheese and crackers and fruit set out to eat in the mid-day of a holiday while we were cooking a nice meal for later. They both acted so surprised that we were going to still have ANOTHER meal later after "all that nice cheese and fruit"

This is both baffling and funny to me.

my grandfather has a can of coke at exactly 10 am every single day for the past...as long as I have known him (I'm 30). Sometimes he will pour some in a glass and share with my grandmother, but usually it's all for him.

my dad calls the cashiers at the grocery store by name and talks about them as though they are his good friends (I guess, in some ways, they actually are)

my MIL is always talking about how 'beautiful' all of her nieces, friends' and neighbors' daughters are. It really doesn't matter what they actually look like. Every young woman she knows is "just so beautiful"

my dad always describes lesser known movies as 'small movies' and will always describe those 'small' movies he likes as 'it's a pretty good little movie. small, of course, but pretty good.'

My mom has SO many (like a previous poster wrote) but it's hard for me to really think of them because I am, slowly but surely, adopting many of her little quirks as my own...it's so strange..becoming my mother

My MIL:

Has a Bedazzler and many episodes of the Smurfs that she recorded on VCR.

Did not back down when confronted with sushi.

Annually outfits all female grandchildren in matching tracksuits, and her own matching tracksuit says "Grammie" on the bosom.
