parents' endearing habits and quirks

My mom tells all of us about the other people in her assisted living place. Oh, my that is Edna who's dog died and she no longer goes to water aerobics. WFF? I mean she can't help herself but really?

My grandmother, when she was alive, had such awful handwriting. Once a month or so she would send us a three or four page letter, and it would take the entire family about an hour to decipher it.

I initially read this as "rarely a shirt". As in, no shirt. Got to the end, and thought "Oh, she's European. I guess that explains it." I'm almost sad that I reread it and now know how you meant it; my way was better.
