Duke and Amherst? Really? Both are night and day harder to get into than UVA.

Only a fool, scholarship recipient, or rich legacy moron would turn down instate UVa to go to Duke.

You seem to be assuming that everyone posting lives in VA. For those of us who don't, UVA costs about the same as private colleges. The challenge for state universities, especially those like UVA and UNC that limit out of state students, is that they can be a little parochial since so many students come from the state. Some people prefer a more geographically diverse student body. So it is perfectly rational to choose Duke over UVA. In fact when you look at the admissions stats the yield for out of state admits is much lower than in state so plenty of accepted students are choosing other schools.

Academically quite good, and they give huge merit scholarships that have lured some top students at my DD's high school (including NMSFs and kids in very top academic tracks who turned down Duke, Dartmouth, Hopkins to go to Tulane and have not regretted it)

+1. The kids I know who attend now turned down some fantastic schools because of Tulane's merit aid.

Please stop. Most smart students will not get into an Ivy League. Most smart kids don't even apply to all the Ivy League schools because they are all different. Some are too Greek, some are too rural. Tufts is a good school as are many, many other schools.
Exactly. But that doesn't make the students rejects as the other poster assumes.

There are many excellent universities with programs that are actually superior to some of the Ivy schools (U of Illinois Urbana is No. 6 in the country for engineering on US News and Business Insider's list....Princeton didn't even make the top 10).

The overall quality of a Princeton education simply can't be compared to a state school, regardless of major.

But it was, once, the sister Ivy equivalent of Columbia, as I understand it. Like when Martha Stewart attended.

UVA is a great financial deal for both VA and DC residents (DCTAG). Any merit offers at other schools carry a GPA requirement and DCTAG does not.

The % students in Greek life at UVA is 29% and Tufts is 25%

With an acceptance rate of 20%, Barnard is quite competitive. I also know several high school girls who recently applied to Barnard but not to Columbia, because they preferred various things about Barnard. The so-called "rivalry" apparently doesn't last much beyond freshman year (and some immature DCUM posters).

Signed, mom of a DD who goes to Columbia but considered Barnard

Because OP, who is probably a troll, asked for "stereotypes". Garbage in, garbage out.
