These schools scream...

All of you screaming about the tuition at Duke -- you shouldknow they offer very generous financial aid to even middle class (HHI 100-150k) families. Not everyone attending is privileged and preppy.

If it were my daughter, I would want her to cross off Duke, UVA, and Tulane just because the % of students in Greek life is so high. I think Colby is too rural and there might be nothing to do but drink. I think the other schools would be great!

What? Says you? Why should anyone make life decisions based on some anonymous poster?

Academically quite good, and they give huge merit scholarships that have lured some top students at my DD's high school (including NMSFs and kids in very top academic tracks who turned down Duke, Dartmouth, Hopkins to go to Tulane and have not regretted it)

Sorry do not believe this for a second! Only kids I know who went to Tulane are kids who had moeny but not the grades. I am talking kids with C's and a few D's all went to Tulane in my D's school....known for a country club school for rich kids who didn't work very hard. I am so sure ANY kid will turn down Hopkins, Dartmouth for Tulane..what are you smoking?

Colby not in the league as most of the others.

I would be happy if my daughters got accepted to Amherst, which is in the same league as Williams and Swarthmore. My sister started at Wellesley but transferred to Stanford after one year. (She did not enjoy the environment at Wellesley)

Tulane sucks. Go to NVCC instead.

Tufts = Ivy League rejects

Please stop. Most smart students will not get into an Ivy League. Most smart kids don't even apply to all the Ivy League schools because they are all different. Some are too Greek, some are too rural. Tufts is a good school as are many, many other schools.

What is NVCC?

Duke and Amherst? Really? Both are night and day harder to get into than UVA.

Only a fool, scholarship recipient, or rich legacy moron would turn down instate UVa to go to Duke.

Exactly. But that doesn't make the students rejects as the other poster assumes.

There are many excellent universities with programs that are actually superior to some of the Ivy schools (U of Illinois Urbana is No. 6 in the country for engineering on US News and Business Insider's list....Princeton didn't even make the top 10).

You need to get it through your thick skull that not everyone is enamored with UVA and other schools may have a better program for their interests.

It is you who sounds foolish with this continuous pronouncement that UVA is a do or die place to attend. It's just not, and I have no dog in the fight.
