Fairfax County gpa calculation

I don't think it gets loaded until they are actually in HS. I know with both my children, they did not access Naviance until sophomore year - after their freshman (and MS) grades were loaded.

The GPA is listed in course history in MS. I don't know about naviance. It should be the same GPA, though.

It seems that there is distinction in each grade (range for each grade, for example "A" ranges from 3.8 to 4.0)

Grade 4.0 scale 100 Point Scale
A 3.8-4.0 93-100
A- 3.4-3.7 90-92
....

Does anyone know how the GPA is calculated then? I mean how to map 93 to 3.8 etc?

High School GPA's are in SIS under Course History(this is the number that matters). I don't know"exactly" how they are calculated(just that they average all of the final grades ranging from 1.0,1.1,1.2........3.7,3.8,3.9,4.0) 0.5 and 1 pt added for Honors and AP

Teachers can use the 4.0 scale or the 100-pt scale in their gradebook, but once the final grade is calculated, the letter graded is converted to quality points. You don’t need to worry about converting a 93 to a 3.?

Final grades awarded to students will be A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D+, D, or F
Quality points are awarded as follows:

A 4.0 C 2.0
A- 3.7 C- 1.7
B+ 3.3 D+ 1.3
B 3.0 D 1.0
B- 2.7 F 0.0
C+ 2.3

So whether a student ended up with a 93 or a 100 in the class, they get a letter grade of “A.” For gpa purposes, that counts as 4.0 unweighted quality points. Likewise, in a class where the teacher used the 4.0 scale, a student who finished the year with a 3.8 gets a letter grade of “A” so this maps to 4.0 quality points.

Great!. Thanks. It seems that the grades for each quarter is averaged for the GPA as per PP. So if you get a B+, A-, A, A in the 1, 2, 3, and 4th quarter the GPA will not be 4 but average of for quarters or
(3.3 + 3.7 + 4 + 4) / 4 = 3.75

Does this sound right?

Go to SIS and scroll to course history. Current GPA is listed for HS

I meant to add that this gpa is weighted.

Thanks!. The question was to understand if the GPA shown in the SIS is average of all the Quarter grades or only final (last quarter)

We use rolling grade book so there’s no averaging. It just is what it is at the end of the year.

Look at the course syllabus for how grades are factored into the final grade.

I did the math for my Sophmore and it came out different than the published gpa in SIS using the poster above info(and adding in the Honors/AP bump) So I am not quite sure which "answer" is correct.

I guess you can email and ask. I feel like they often do an adjustment over the summer. Did you include any high school classes from middle school (like Algebra or a foreign language?)

Here is what is documented. The GPA calculation in SIS does not align at this point. Hopefully it may change after the update (SIS is down now for update). The current GPA seems to average the quarter grades.

"Quality points shall be assigned to final grades earned in all courses for which high school credit is received and will be used in Grade Point Average (GPA) calculations."

So if you got an A- in an AP class then it is counted as 4.7 instead of 3.7?

Yes, 1 point added for an AP course so an A- is a 4.7 and a B+ is a 4.3, a B is a 4.0, etc.
