Fairfax County gpa calculation

FCPS GPA calculation question -- this is for US VA History Honors, where the syllabus states the final grade is calculated by averaging all four quarters.

1st quarter: 82.6 round-up to 83 = B (3.5 weighted)
2nd quarter: 88.6 round-up to 89 = B+ (3.8 weighted)
3rd quarter: 76.0 = C (2.5 weighted)
4th quarter: ?

If trying to get a B for the year, by averaging the numerical grades, he would have to get an 82.8 in 4th quarter to get a B for the year (or 3.0 u/w; 3.5 weighted).

82.6 + 88.6 + 76 + 82.8 = 330
330/4 = 82.5
round-up to 83 = B (3.5 weighted)

However, if averaging quality points, getting a B in 4th quarter would result in lower than a B for the year.

3.0 + 3.3 + 2 + 3 = 11.3
11.4/4 = 2.825
round-up to 2.83 = B- (3.325/B+ weighted)

Which approach will teachers usually use?

Based on what I've seen with my kids in FCPS high schools since 2012, the teachers keep a running grade book based on a 100 point scale - they will average your kid's actual exact quarter-end grades at the end of the year.

Usually, the final exam is worth 10, 15, or 20% of the final grade (that should be on the syllabus), so don't leave that out of your calculation.

How do they handle this with students transferring from out-of-state or privates?

Thank you. I checked the syllabus and there is no additional points for the final exam, just the average of four quarters.

FCPS : Usually a HS student will take 7 courses each year. If a HS student decides to take a class Pass/Fail - assuming they pass with a P at the end of the year - does the GPA calculation divide by 6 courses to determine the GPA for that school year?

"A student’s GPA shall be determined by dividing the total number of quality points earned by the number of courses attempted. The GPA shall be reported to three decimal places (thousandths)."

There is no GPA calculation for a specific school year; it is a cumulative calculation. 2 high school courses in 8th grade plus 6 courses in 9th grade in addition to pass/fail course means dividing by 8 courses at the end of 9th grade for the GPA calculation.

Thank you to pp that answered this question. HS transcript does show yearly GPA and also cumulative GPA so I want to make sure I understand the calculation in any year where a student takes a P/F elective.

DC (FCPS freshman) told me the final grades are calculated on a rolling basis, not on a quarterly basis. Is that right? And what exactly does that mean?

NEW QUESTION HERE:

Does PE count as much as a grade for Biology or History or other?

So, if you have an "A" in PE it is given the same weight as an "A" in a non-honors/non-AP class when calculating GPA?

Do colleges strip out grades for PE and re-calculate a kid's GPA?

Yes, the A in PE counts the same as the A in regular Biology or History. How, that's treated by colleges varies. But, almost certainly to be recalculated without the PE grade the more selective the college.

How do the VA state colleges/universities handle GPAs? Do they only look at the core subjects? Strip out PE? Take the whole thing?

On how many different threads are you going to keep asking the same questions? Every college is different.

The GPA in SIS under course history is weighted.

Yep, weighted.
