My 5.5 year old just searched for "Nakid women" on the ipad...

Why do you let a five year old use an I-pad?

-1. I think it is normal 5 year old silliness and you are projecting sexual interest on garden variety potty talk.
Are you serious. Teenagers look stuff up, or maybe 10 year olds. I've never heard of a 5 year old ever doing it. I'm a teacher, btw.

Pp, here, I know, I forgot to put a question mark in previous statement, before you jump in.

And hang out with more 5 year olds?

I have a 6 year old. I think I know what a typical one is like. Potty humor giggles at silly things, fine. A deliberate search like that? No.

Maybe he just isn't as motivated.

Right...as in maybe nearly all kids don't do this. This isn't in the realm of normal.

Clearly your son is gifted!

We have a book titled "Amazing You" and also science books with pictures of naked people in them. They've been on my kids' bookshelves since they were about 3 or 4. I'd much rather my kids look at the pictures in these to see normal naked people than search on the Internet and come up with pictures of porn stars. I think giving them free access to these types of pictures satisfies their curiosity- for now at least.

WTH? I (a girl) was looking up words like "penis" and "vagina" ("Birth canal?" How disappointing) in the dictionary when I was around that age. I can picture doing this in 2nd grade, during most of which I was 6. If we'd had the Internet in the 80s, I would have done it there. It doesn't mean I would have been looking for p*rn, nor would I have been happy to have found it, but I'm pretty sure this is the equivalent curiosity. If you believe no kid you know is curious about anything related to sex or nudity until 10... Well, I don't know what to say to you.

My son would totally have done this, but he wasn't really spelling until 6.

The realm of normal is wide and deep. It doesn't sound like you truly appreciate that.

We have always tried to be fairly open in discussing his interests or facts of life...this was a new one. His other favorite searches are Legos, Kindereggs, Angry Birds, and of all things watching a particular tornado safety preparation video on youtube.

Gone are the days of the encyclopedia.

Encylopedias are still taught in Virginia.

I absolutely don't think it's typical. I would discuss it with him and see why he has any kind of fascination, he is much too young.

Then you weren't normal either. All I'm saying is I've been working with this age for over a decade, and I've never heard one case of this. It's not normal behavior to start that young.

My 5 y.o. DD talks about naked all the time. She also loves potty words. My 6 y.o. never talked about any of those things. We wear clothes around the house and she is not generally exposed to anyone naked.

Its a personality thing.
