Wow - I always pay at Starbucks with my pre-poaded card, but keep change in my pocket for the tip jar or a homeless person or a parking meter - whatever. These are the nice people you see everyday who hand you your coffee with a smile. would it really hurt you to drop a bit of change in their tip jar just to say "thanks - I appreciate you".

It seems that there's a lot if anger around tipping at coffee shops. I worked at coffee shops and always appreciated the little extra we all made (tips are split between all staff members). It allowed for extra grocery money, maybe a tank of gas, etc. Coffee shop employees don't make a lot - maybe a hair more than minimum wage - and the tips are a definite help.

By the same logic we should also tip the cashiers at the grocery store, they also make minimum wage or slightly higher....

Okay snarky . I think there's a difference in getting a cup of coffee (personalized service, quality product, ambience) and getting groceries (necessity of the industrialized world, impersonal service). Have you worked in a service job before? Oh, and grocery store workers frequently are eligible for benefits and discounted groceries.

But would you tip for a cup of coffee at places like McDonalds or Dunkin Donuts? I don't typically hang out at Starbucks to enjoy the "ambiance"- typically grab 'n go.

The only decent argument I have ever heard in favor of tipping at all is the fact that waiters and waitresses make below the standard minimum wage. Therefore, tips are necessary to make up for this. For counter service, the employees generally make at least the minimum wage. Therefore, I never tip. I don't believe that I ever will.

You can argue the same for anyone. I should put a tip jar on my desk at work.

I'm a former barista, and people feel very entitled about their coffee. So either the change or a solid buck if I have it, and sometimes change or a buck even if I pay with a card.
