| We are in the same position. Most of this is in retirement funds, so we do no see it. living in a $500K home does not give one the feeling of being a multi millionaire in this area. The COL here is very high and always going up. I think if you compare here to living in someplace like Manhattan, you get a better picture. most people with your net worth feel pretty poor by Manhattan standards. Since most of this has happened in the last 15 years, many people are still stuck in the it was a manageable city to live in mindset. |
You are a horrible person. |
Who wishes cancer on anyone? |

Op good job saving money. What I've noticed as I moved in to a more affluent neighborhood is that my neighbors are more concerned with the appearance of affluence and spend unreasonably. As I've gotten to know people here I am stunned by how little most of them have saved. My dh and I have been accused of not being able to afford our home but we have several million saved and continue to save. Overt displays of wealth, like those housewife type shows, are tacky.
Op remember that having money is more impressive than spending money. |

I suspect the issue is the house. At $500k you either live super far out or you are living in a condo or small townhouse. At your income you can afford to take on some mortgage debt to live either closer in or in a nicer house. As a PP said with a 15 year loan you will have it paid off well before retirement, and rates are still very low.
Otherwise continue to save for retirement and college. You don't say how many kids you have or what ages so it's hard to tell if $200k is adequate or not. We aimed for $200k for each kid, knowing that we would have to supplement out of current income (they are both in college now so $60-62k/year is the annual tuition range). |
Yes, neighborhood has a lot to do with it. OP would feel wealthy in my neighborhood! |
Are you serious? By your neighbors, no less? No wonder OP feels poor! With friends like that, who needs enemies? American suburban culture is so messed up. |

OMG. I am the ppx2. This did not come out the way I wanted it to....I do not wish the struggles, rather, when they have read struggles.. . it should have read : When I see posts like this, I wish for them to understand real struggles. For example, I have stage 4 Cancer. I do not worry about what I have or where anyone else is after that. Every day is a gift. FWIW, my net worth is 1 mil at 51. |
You are SO behind the times. Cities are where it's at, baby. You don't need to worry about the people who own McMansions. They shop at Target and watch reruns on cable. You need to worry about the 20 and 30-somethings who aren't saving a dime because they eat out every other night, take fancy vacations and spend money on private schools if they ever get around to having any kids. |
DP here, and I was pretty sure that was what you meant in the first place. |
| Whats the point of saving this much, it sounds miserable, spend it or your kids will |
| Yeah, that's another thing. I want to leave money for my kids. I really wanted a $1,200 purse and decided against. With a lot of those purchases I think of what it would mean to my child if I just put that money away and left it for them. |
There's a reason that Tradesy and Ebay exist. |
