Net Worth of 2.4M 41 years old and feel poor

Anonymous
Ok - I'm sure I'll get a lot of grief. We just paid off our house. We have no debt and have 2.4M net worth. We have 1.6 M retirement, 500k. house equity, 200k college savings, 100k cash. I know we aren't poor but it seems like our friends are doing so much better. They have nicer homes, take better vacations and don't seem as concerned about money. We make about 235k combined and our salaries are equal. It seems like so many people make 200k each these days.

Please tell me that I live in a bubble.

Congrats on paying off your house! Maybe in a few months, when you have that mortgage money in your pocket, you'll feel richer? I wouldn't worry about other people - do you really know what their ledgers look like? They could all be in debt up to their eyeballs. But you aren't. Think about that.

Survive a heart attack. You will never think a second about it again.

That's true..having good health is priceless.

You live in a bubble. Go volunteer at a homeless shelter. You don't seem to appreciate anything you have and sound like you will live a sad life of you continue to focus on what you don't have rather than what you do.

Find some new friends?

Our HHI is 100k, we have $1,000 saved, no college money saved. I do not feel poor or rich but our family considers us "rich" but some of them have higher HHI's and simply can't manage it correctly.

If you are a saver, then you are never going to appear as well off as your friends even if they make more. Most people do not have the discipline to save.

Stop comparing yourself to others. This is not high school. Will making more money really make you happy?

If you are going to compare yourself to others (and you probably will, it's human nature) compare yourself to people less successful than you as well. You are obviously living in a bubble and are in desperate need of perspective, as others have said.

So-start taking nicer vacations. You have a high income, no debt and minimal housing expenses. If you want a different lifestyle, start living it.

When I see posts like this, I wish for them to have real struggles. For example, stage 4 Cancer. I do not worry about what I have or where anyone else is after that.

Every day is a gift. FWIW, my net worth is 1 mil at 51.
