Any Catholics out there who "feel" Protestant?

there is nothing wrong with church shopping.

I haven't BTDT, but we keep thinking about leaving our catholic church for the Episcopalian one down the street.

Do you have kids? That is what is making me pause from making the jump. I've got a 7th grader (so one year away from confirmation). We were staying at the catholic church to get my youngest through first communion.

Funny about the PPs on the music. My fav mass is a later mass with the hippy guitar music of my youth (lead by a 70 year old). I don't like the "teen" mass with the modern music! (nothing against Amy grant, but I like songs I know by heart.) But, my husband and I joke that the guitar mass 30 years ago would have been the "youth" mass. The early mass is more traditional.

Each Church has a different vibe. The catholic church closest to my house only knows how to play the organ - no guitar mass, teen mass or spanish mass like my church(I've never gone to the spanish mass)

16:01 here - Sorry, totally didn't see the line about the kids - stick it out one more year and get confirmation done. Attend church as a family for the year. Then start the church shopping. I think going to church as a family is more important than what church you go to. (Although I do like my Holy day masses during work when I don't have to correct any kids)

Of note, are you a scout? I've heard different things about the Eagle scout requirement for religion. Might be worth checking out if your DS is looking to get an Eagle scout.

No, we did scouting briefly but no longer.

I like some church mudc (Catholic here). Something like this:

This thread has been really enlightening to me.

So, Lutherans are Calvinists but many would probably disagree with the pre-determined saved or not thing, but still feel Lutheran? Do I understand that right?

Lutherans are NOT Calvinists.

So who are Calvinists, if not Lutherans? Which churches?

Some Baptists, some (maybe all?) Presbyterians.

The Dutch Reform Church is Calvinist--this is the dominant religion among South African Afrikaaners.

Where do other Protestants differ from Calvinists? I am Catholic and think of Presbyterians and Lutherans as kind of similar.

Why on earth do you equate Presbyterians and Lutherans? The Presbyterian church has Calvinist roots. The Lutheran church is the reformed Catholic Church, just as the Episcopal one is. In fact, the Lutheran and Episcopal churches have been in full communion for three decades.

Because I'm Catholic and they basically seem like mainline Protestant denominations to me? Aren't they?

Aren't the Lutheran- Missouri Synod basically evangelicals? (That was a good explanation of their disagreements with Calvinism, but most Lutherans I know are ECLA and look ensconce at the Missouri Synod).

Yes, they are both mainline Protestant denominations, but that is where any similarities end.

I rhin that yes, Lutheran/Missouri Synod are evangelical -but so are ELCA Lutherans. What does that have to do with Calvinistn?

This isn't about scandals or anything, but rather realizing I believe the Eucharist is representative of Christ (not Transubstantiation), never been heavily into Mary, saying rosary, going to confession (although I do it). I feel I should be with God when and where I want, not necessarily each Sunday at Mass. Want to see different sides of Scripture and not what we're told by Rome, etc.

There's no anger, just my thinking there's no point in staying the course. DS has one year until confirmation and then I'd like him to decide if he wants to remain Catholic or come with me to a Protestant church, etc (DH was raised Protestant but doesn't really attend now).

Has anyone BTDT?

* It would be helpful if this didn't devolve into an anti-Catholic hateful thread, thanks.

OP, I used to feel the same way as you. Actually, a few years ago I stopped attending mass and I left the Roman Catholic Church. During my departure I spent time in various Protestant denominations. Honestly, it was one of the biggest mistakes of my life. I've seen and I have experienced some of the worst forms of evil through Protestant churches. The manipulation, guilt trips, draining my finances, and the constant negativity took its toll on me. I wish I could take back those years. I was truly lost and people took advantage of me. I'm not going to go in great detail about my experiences because they're pretty disturbing. Two years ago I even stopped going to church because I was so through with organized religion. To make a long story short I recently returned to Catholicism. Maybe finding another parish will be great for you. I wish that I would have just found another parish instead of dabbling into Protestant churches. The various missions and caring about human rights are the things that I love about the Catholic faith. Catholics generally care about the well-being of others. I didn't see that in many of the Protestant churches that I dabbled into. All I know is that if I'm sick, poor, and dying on the side of the road chances are the individual that would help me will more than likely be a Catholic. A Catholic will feed you, help you get medical attention, or get you off of the road. A Protestant will tell you that, "You deserved the punishment or that they will pray for you." They will never lift a finger to help you. That is the difference that I discovered between Catholics and Protestants. Also, I couldn't believe how segregated and racists some Protestant churches were. The level of hatred against Jews, Catholics, Muslims, and minorities were just too much for me to bear. I've heard way too many hateful sermons in Protestant churches. I attended a religious convention once that felt like a KKK rally. It was an eye opening experience for me.
