DCPS School Planning Team here -- ask us anything about Brookland Middle School!

Why is the library shelves set up as random shelves and not in rows

What happened at the principal selection feedback meeting? Thanks!

I am hoping they will over opportunities for advanced language for students coming from immersion schools. DCI sounds like it won't be a good fit for us so I am trying to find another option.

I heard from others who attended the meetings that they are definitely looking at that, wanting to attract people back from the language immersion charters.

Encouraging news! I am going to keep hoping.

Offer an honors track and I'll consider strongly pulling my child out of a well regarded PCS that won't challenge.

Yes! But also show me you're giving the kids that aren't "honors" material the support they need, lower teacher:student ratio and after school support, I'll be WAY more interested in sending my kid to a school where my involvement and fundraising benefit both my middle-class going to so just fine kids, as well as those that don't get as much support on the home front.

Ward 4. We are looking for a college prep model. We would consider switching from a WOTP middle school IF Brookland Middle has strong foreign language offerings, strong math, science, English and history teachers, small class sizes, with a well supported robotics club and other extracurriculars (mathletes, debate, drama, music, art shows?) We'd like our kids to be ahead of the curve as far as preparing to enroll in HS AP classes, top level math etc. when they get to HS, not struggling to catch up to peers around the country who will be competing with them for spots at top colleges.

Wow, fellow parent here. That's a lot of extras to expect of a MS in its first year. I'd imagine it would need time to work up to having a robotics and debate club. I'll be surprised if it hits its targeted enrollment numbers in the fall.

What schools are you interested in hearing more about? Our office is generally limited to opening new schools and major high school renovations, but we can try to put you in touch with the right people. In the meantime, if you want to email us with your questions, you can reach out to Andrew.katz-moses@dc.gov.

Coolidge SHS and Roosevelt, are both schools going to be renovated. What impact will the new Roosevelt have on Coolidge? What exactly does an International high school mean, and will it still have programs for ESL students and adult learners?

I think that really depends on staff. If staff are interested and ready to support these programs, debate, robotics and much more could happen in the first year with ease.

Love the radio silence on the principals' statements esp. from the planning team. Anyone have anything at all to share about potential principal candidates?
