Do you think USAJOBS website is a joke?

Yes.

Still looking for a job and I truly think getting hired through them is by nepotism. I am thinking it is a joke because I am fast approaching 20 applications and no luck. My frustration with the site is skyrocketing.

Just because you are a vet don't mean jack squat!

If vets can't get hired through USAJOBS then we're all doomed.

+10000.

No - its not a joke - its how I got my job.

HUGE joke. And it pisses me off that to get the promotion that I worked for for 4 years and earned that I need to compete for it on Usa jobs. Ridiculous. Even if someone was more qualified than me, my agency couldn't hire them because they don't have room for 2 FTEs (me and someone else).

I'm a Fed, and got my job through USAJobs in 2009. Now in fairness, I was already a contractor in the agency, but the job I applied for was in an entirely different department; I knew no one there. I did find out later that the supervisor at my fed position knew the fed supervisor where I was contracting, and called to verify that I was a good worker, but other than someone vouching for me, I got the job on my own. And the vouching came post interview, so I had to make my way through the USAJobs portion on my own merits.

Since then, I've gotten one promotion through USAJobs and am working on a second. I have applied to jobs at other agencies that are in my field, and gotten a few interviews, but no offers. It isn't easy to move between agencies, or up within your own in some cases, but it is a bit easier once you get in. Good luck.

my friend was working at an agency for years and her boss created a new job specifically for her (she has very specialized skills) BUT then the boss had to give the job to a less-qualified vet. my friend just left after that - so heart breaking for her.

I should add I'm not a vet and was not previously in the federal government.

Me too!

This is annoying to me. Up front, no, I'm not a vet. Yes, I believe accommodations should be made for veterans who have served our country. But I hate the "vet preference" that gives additional weight to their qualification scores. Those scores should be based on merit alone. If, after the scores are calculated, there is a vet on the list, I have no problem giving them the first interview/preference for the job, but they should make that list on their own merits first. Just my opinion, I'm sure someone will have a problem with it.

Congrats, but that was SIX years ago.

I am not a vet, and just got a job through USAJOBS. I am a lawyer, and got a DOJ job. I applied to ~25 jobs, and only got 2 interviews, and one job.

DOJ has direct hire authority for lawyers. It's not the same as other positions.

Has much changed in six years? I've been under the impression that it was always a crapshoot.

Yes. I worked for the government for a little over a year. I keep applying to government jobs and can't get an interview.
