Nope... To put it all in perspective, there are hundreds of families who are doing fine with BASIS, and who think it's a good school meeting most of their expectations, and far better than the alternatives.
And then there's a tiny handful making a huge overblown ruckus, mostly due to their own misunderstandings or skewed expectations - complete with dramatic screaming of "I'm not wrong, it's the rest of everything and the entire universe that is wrong and has to change!" |
| Start a yahoo listserv. Name it Basis DC listserv. Build it and they will come. |
You're probably the nut that posts personal attacks and other crazy nonsense on our school listserv. Fortunately, most of us ignore you now because we know you'd "be pretty pissed" about just about anything. |
| This is why private schools. Sadly. |
Right, because there are no crazy parents in private school.
|
precisely my point. You ignore that person, you do not shut down the list serve. I don't know what kind of school you go to, but at a school where most people think that BOOSTERS = for the administration, that list serve was all we had in terms of a community that everyone who wanted could participate anyway, even though they censored and moderated anyone who made complaints about Basis DC. |
There is clinical/truly crazy, intolerable crazy, mildly intolerable crazy, and quirky crazy. Private schools tend to non-select the first two. Charters must accept all of them. |
Taking a chance....math, you know. BASIS is middle school and my child is 4 years away. So, doing the math, we'd never overlap. Yay! I wonder where her kids went to elementary? YuYing? As someone said, YY used to be the crazy, now it's BASIS. Omg, whrere will this person pick next? Walls? Though they might be smart enough not to pick her kid. |
| Based on OP's post alone, I'm thinking Basis is a no go. Geezzz |
| BASIS is doing fine. They need a real board rather than hand-picked people who Michael and Olga liked and who can play with Craig B. |
That'd kinda be like deciding not to try out a great new Tapas bar just because some yokel thought it was a Mexican restaurant and got mad because he couldn't find tacos on the menu. |
Actually no one was hand picked as you say and I wager most of them have never met the Blocks or at most have only spoken to them for a few minutes at most. Any parent is free to run for the Booster's board and all parents may vote for Booster's board. All of the current members of the Booster's board were elected by parents. Get your facts straight.

Where people throw their money around to silence everyone who disagrees with what they want to do with the direction of the school. My way or the high way. Money talks, and only the parents with money have the right to talk. And they may be able to get their kids off the hook where kids of lesser mortals would get expelled. It is never their children's fault, and no one would every suggest that it possibly was. You know, I'll take Basis with its crazies posting on our list serve any day, where the only kind of prestige students recognize is academic, and pretty soon, we are going to give you a run for your money in terms of college admissions - although kids will probably take offers of merit scholarships over going to the Ivies which do not offer them, but I have hopes for our present 8th graders - the third graduating class,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, If this is the way you want to feel better about the enormous amounts of money you are spending for private school before you even start to fork over college tuition, good on ya. Fact remains, kids who do their best and do well in advanced courses at Basis will get tremendous attention from colleges that your trust fund babies could only have wet dreams about, unless you make that critical phone call. We are in a different league. The academic merit, predominantly minority, predominantly in need of financial aid league. So almost any kids would take the free ride which used to be offered at Chapel Hill in some kind of honors program (no details, maybe it no longer does, but my friend who took that free ride went to NCS over HYP.) You are in a private school not because of nuts on the list serve, but because you do not want your larla exposed to anyone who is eligible for free and reduced meals (FARMS) and oooooooooooooooh black! It is fine for your school to have its token minorities, as long as they behave. But you would never do what we are doing, taking a risk that our kids will thrive in this kind of diverse, somewhat chaotic environment, while getting stellar educations. |
| Oh, and in case you are curious, both of us went to private schools, and both of us went to HYP, we are not AA, and our kids are thriving academically and socially at Basis DC. |
Yikes, no BASIS for me -- staying with my neighborhood school, where it's safe & sane!! |
