Have you ever gotten food poisoning from a home cooked meal?

Anonymous
My ILs have very questionable food safety habits (for example, they have raw burgers on a plate, they put the burgers on the grill, then put the cooked burgers back on the unwashed plate). They do that sort of thing all the time. I tend to watch them very closely when we eat at their house, and where my (young) children are concerned, I try to give them food I think is safe (like a burger from the top of the pile....). I consider it no wonder that MIL and FIL routinely have the "stomach bug."

Yes, once when I was 13 from chicken my mom cooked. I've probably been sick 15+ times from restaurants, though.

My 2 year old got seriously sick off some blueberries. Well that was what was coming up all night long so if not that then not sure what. It was terrible and scary.

DH used to get it a lot growing up. He moves in with me, he stops getting it. I have witnessed my MIL's actions in the kitchen. I can do the math.

lol. same here. my DH's mom cleans her dishes with a LEMON. and then lectures me on how that's all you need to sanitize.

Yup. A lemon. She says "I tell my kids, that is all you need."

My DH was always sick before he moved in with me but also complains that now his cast-iron stomach is gone.

Ew! I'm the one you quoted with the MIL, but at least the woman has soap! I'm a big proponent of vinegar for cleaning, but that's a few steps over the line! My problems are when I go looking in her house for a snack and the first 3 things I pull out of the fridge (like hummus or veggies) are covered in mold, and she doesn't seem bothered by it. And the same nasty rag that wipes everything down, even after there's been raw meat. And the cloth napkins that she puts back in the cabinet after the meal if they don't "look" dirty, and the (mouse?) poop I found in the silverware drawer....I could keep going but I'm gonna go hurl.

Lemons are expensive these days, lady must be loaded. I use lemon for a lot of home remedies but cleaning dishes is not one of them!

Yah. I should mention it is the same lemon for the entire set of dirty dishes. She gets a lot of bang for her lemon buck.

(and honestly, I've used vinegar, etc to clean and such but this is just so gross to me -- )

Ewww. This and the mouse poop MIL are the winners. I'll be the first to admit I don't have the cleanest house, but I am fairly vigilant about mold and cleaning in the kitchen. I am fine with leaving stuff out for a long while -- I've happily eaten soup or stew that has spent the night cooling on the stove -- but I make a regular mold inspection of the fridge and toss anything questionable. (Though with something like cheese, you can cut the moldy part off and the rest is usually fine.)

I have never gotten food poisoning from any source, thank G-d. But a few weeks ago I made some chicken sausage that smelled funny. It smelled kind of fishy. I had cooked fish in the same pan the day before, but I washed it thoroughly. DH and I gingerly ate about 1/3 of the sausage, and it tasted ok, but I just couldn't get over the smell. So we tossed the rest. We didn't get sick but I didn't really want to risk eating it over the next two or three days.

No, I haven't ever gotten sick from home cooking. Gotten food poisoning once from an airport Chili's. Still have a bad gut reaction when I see them in an airport.

I'm not obsessive about food safety but do use basic precautions - food temp, don't use something if it smells funky, don't reuse a knife/cutting board that had raw meat on it, wipe down countertops.

I'm more lax with egg safety; I just don't see raw eggs as that big of a deal for the ages/health of people in my home.

Yes. In my twenties, I left raw chicken in the fridge for up to a week at a time, thinking if I cooked it well it would be fine. My BF at the time and I got sick a lot after eating those chicken meals. I also got seriously ill from raw cookie dough, also in my twenties. I'm much more vigilant now and probably throw away more food than I should, erring on the side of caution.

Mine uses a bar of dove soap and the same sponge she uses to wipe down counters and the stove with. She's also the one who uses the bathroom and then bypasses the sink actually in the bathroom to wash her hands in the kitchen sink. When I visit I have to take mental pictures of the expiration dates of things in her fridge so I know what to avoid.
