Jack Rogers Sandals

My first thought was that maybe someone locally made them because they weren't all that attractive, yet only people in this very small population were wearing them. I caught the name of the shoes once and looked them up.

Having lived many places, but really only noticing them here in large amounts, and since in smaller amounts in the south. I would classify them as Southern prep -- particularly based on who is wearing them. The ladies that I know who wear them here are predominately from the south. There are a few who aren't and wear them. I feel that those ladies are trying to fit in a bit with the Southern prep crowd.

I'm not Southern, not by a long shot, and I like them. I've seen them for a couple of decades at least. They used to be super cheap, but for some reason have gotten really pricey. Just because a few women from the south wear them, doesn't make them "southern."

+1. Perfectly stated. My exact reaction! When did old lady sandals get popular with 40 year old women?!

They are not so much southern as preppy. They started as a small shop in Palm Beach and wearing them was a sign that you were part of the beach club set.

You will see them in NYC/the hamptons/Newport etc.

I'd say they're more popular with college girls than 40 year old women.

Southern women dressy preppy. For example, seersucker is actually southern but most people probably think it's from New England prepsters

I have on a pair right now. I own a couple and love them. My style is New England preppy...I am from new England. I also have narrow feet and they are comfortable on me.

I don't do Dansko....

The Jack Rogers brand tends to run very narrow. I ordered mine online from the Palm Beach Sandal Company, which makes essentially the same shoes but slightly wider. Supposedly they are also more comfortable, although I haven't done a side-by-side comparison. I found this blog post (not my blog) that compares the two and also provides some interesting history:
