I think it's kind of appalling that the fireworks are allowed to go on for as long, as late and as dangerous as they were. True, my young kids were freaked out and kept awake until quite late (they lived the first years of their lives in freaking Brooklyn so me thinks they count as city kids). Maybe cops can stop turning a blind eye to the law after, say, midnight? Beyond being obnoxious, it's also dangerous.
If you could tie setting off fireworks late at night to say, voting or enlisting in armed services or other noble civic actions, I'd be happy for my family to give up sleep, but I doubt there is any correlation between the two. Or maybe even a negative correlation. Perhaps I can get a grant to study this and we can change the culture with some cold hard data in hand (said in jest)
