These apartments in SW DC are means tested, well maintained and pretty affordable. And a couple blocks to two metro stations.

+1 for Bowie. You can drive. You can take MARC. You can take the Park and Ride bus to metro. So there are lots of options. |
|
North Kensington to downtown is about 40-45min.
It's the area north of Connecticut and University Boulevard intersection. The houses are usually 100-200k below Kensington prices (400k-ish). |
There's also a MARC station in Kensington, so you could take the train to Union and switch to Metro. |
| Laurel. MARC, drive to metro at Greenbelt, or drive all the way. But 45 min door to door? Only on a really good day. Schools are dependent on neighborhood (some good, some not) and get dicey at middle school. |
| One more vote for the NE DC / PG Rt 1 corridor - Eckington, Woodridge, Mt Rainier, Brentwood, Hyattsville, Riverdale, College Park - great, affordable communities and lots of new development coming very soon (Whole Foods in 2015). |
Yes, that stretch of 95 is notorious for traffic problems! I used to live in Fredericksburg and we have very bad memories of that commute! |
|
The outer limit of the 45 minute commute on the north side is southern Laurel (basically PG County Laurel or AA County Laurel). Once you get up to Howard County Laurel, you are an hour away from DC and Glen Burnie is closer to 90 minutes from DC.
And before the MoCo trolls who hate PG County come on board, the crime statistics for northern PG County outside the beltway (e.g. Laurel, Greenbelt, Bowie) are about the same as most of Montgomery County, so it's safe. I agree that Greenbelt sounds like an excellent locale for OP. Another good area is the large Montpelier neighborhood of southern Laurel. |
Another endorsement of this. Some room to grow up this way, but I dont deal with traffic, I can bike everywhere, RIA is getting it's act together (slowly, in places), Whole Foods coming further up, new restaurants coming on Rt1, Brookland also getting a lot of money thrown at it on the other side. Very happy with this area for the price. |
Alexandria? |
| Clarksburg and take MARC from Germantown. |
|
Bowie.
You'd have to pay me to live in glen dirty and the housing costs aren't much different. |

Point of rocks also gets the marc
Do you want rural? |
Yes, this. Live in CP and my commute is great. |
