Infants, Toddlers, & Preschoolers
I always crack up driving along there. All those giant faux chateaux and faux Italianate villas, many with no landscaping, all with giant floodlights highlighting the "architectural features." And what is up with all those "Niroo Mansions" signs? Plus the only people you see out on foot are either joggers or nannies/housekeepers/gardeners trudging from the bus stop to their workplaces. It's hilarious.

I live in Potomac (in a nice townhouse community) I would have loved to have been able to afford an 800K house but we love our townhouse and have great neighbors. With your price-range you have the best of both worlds. You'll have a nice single family house (or luxury townhouse) and a great location. I love being one second away from Rockville and Bethesda and only 12 miles to DC. It is convenient to 495 and 270 so I get anywhere fast! good luck!! There are sooooo many nice people here. (I do hate parking though in the shopping centers-lots of people just back out without looking-I normally park as far away as I can and I have a nice car too but I don't drive like I own the entire road like alot of people do~ (also I love being able to send my DC when the time comes to good public schools)

I think parents who give their child a BMW, Lexus or Bends to drive to HS ought to be arrested and charged with child abuse.
In the nouveau riche, McMansion-filled suburb where we used to live, many of the HS kids drove fast, expensive cars. And every year, drunk out of their minds, kids drove into trees and off roads, killing themselves and their friends in the cars their parents so lovingly bought for them. OP, maybe you can make it work in Potomac, but I wouldn't bet on it. I think most of the snarky posts are from the very people you are trying to avoid. |
| Okay, it's "Benz," not "Bends." |
Just curious, where do you live? I am on the border of Bethesda and Potomac and I think you can find snooty people in pretty much any affluent neighborhood in the DC Metro region. If you have found a neighborhood of down-to-earth people I would love to hear about it. I love our neighborhood (near intersection of Seven Locks Rd and River Rd). It has its share of BMW-driving, yoga moms but many of them are quite nice if you can get past the bling. A friend of ours who does counseling all across Montgomery County says that every high school has its problems, Churchill no more than any other. And at least with Churchill the kids will get a good academic education in addition to learning how to deal with snobs. |
I have read every post on here and this just doesn't make sense. So many people who live here (as I do) wrote nice things that explained the layout of Potomac. I, like so many others moved here specifically because it was more affordable than DC, Chevy Chase or Bethesda. You'll find people who want to show off their money everywhere you go--certainly not more in Potomac than other areas. Every Mom I have met with young children (since I had my DC) has been extremely nice and down to earth. |
| We just moved to Potomac within the past year. I was nervous about the snob factor and I admit, there are a lot of extremely wealthy people. But, from our perspective, it offered the combination we were looking for: reduced commute (no more 270!), excellent schools, and a decent sized house w/yard (we couldn't afford a yard if we went closer in to Bethesda). In terms of keeping up with Joneses, I've decided it's best to be happy with what we have and feel grateful that our daughter can attend one of the best school systems in the nation. I also think it's up to my husband and me to ensure that we instill our daughter with a high level of confidence and self respect - seems to go a long way to battling those high school issues. |
