Infants, Toddlers, & Preschoolers
| We currently live in NW DC and love the area, however we are looking to buy a house and are finding that we can actually buy more for our money in Potomac. I would most likely either be a stay at home mom or work part time and have DC in daycare. Everyone I have met from Potomac (which is limited as they are all through my extremely well off sister in law) don't work and have nannies. Would we be of the minority if I were to stay home or work part time? I have also found that the people I have met in DC and close in Bethesda are more laid back. The people I have met that live in Potomac seem more uppity and materialistic. Is this a fair judgement of Potomac and the populuation??? Please be honest. |
| Potomac is a fairly large area with many different types of communities. Some homes are moderate and right next to one another, others are HUGE and acres apart. I think it would depend on what neighborhood you select but the short answer is no, not all families have sah moms with nannies. There are many moms who work full time and part time in Potomac. I think either way, if you move just do what you need to do. Does it matter what the Jones are doing? |
| I think you should move to Bethesda if you feel this way. (And I don't disagree with you- I don't live in any of those places so I have no idea). |

Agree, why would you even think of moving to Potomac if you feel this way.
And, BTW, your comments are completely off base in my opinion. I live on Potomac and none of my friends are as you describe. In fact, most of my friends work, and (gasp), even plan on sending their kids to public school. And we describe people from Chevy Chase and other wealthy part of NW as being materialistic and obsessed with status. Just take a look at the private school board, which is clearly dominated by DC families. I also see no difference b/w Bethesda and Potomac. In fact, the border is behind my house. So it is silly to think that people magically transform into jerks when they cross the border. There are nice families everyone, as well as assholes. I really don't see the point of this post at all. People who actually live in Potomac will, for the most part, disagree with you, and people who do not, will stereotype. |
| Not all of Potomac is frou frou and fancy. There are very reasonable areas and lots of public schools. Lots of working parents. Where are you looking OP? Maybe the area you are looking at is in the super wealthy range or maybe your sister in law is just the exception. |
| My DH and I have also thought about moving to Potomac. Can anyone suggest communities that might be more laid back and progressive then others? |
| Hey, be easy on OP. She pointed out that she had only met people through her sister-in-law so she's trying to find out if everyone is like that in Potomac. |
| Oh, yes, every last single person.... |
|
New poster here and I can't believe how instantly snarky the replies to this post have been!
I think it's a perfectly legitimate question and is one that is asked all the time on this board (i.e. what is the personality and/or or typical demographic of this or that community/town/neighborhood?" |
| My new year's resolution is killing me.... |
I agree with PP. There's truth to what the OP is asking. With money comes an uppity attitude, especially with the nouveau riche. I have two family members who moved to Potomac from Wheaton, and you can't even talk to them anymore b/c they've become so materialistic. OP, do your research. Older parts of Potomac that don't have the gargantuan homes draw in a different crowd - not as pretentious. |
| I don't agree that this thread has turned snarky, particularly by DCUM's standards. People are just responding and pointing out the you can't stereotype, particularly among neighborhoods that are within 5-10 miles of each other (ie., Chevy Chase, NW DC, Bethesda Rockville). |
| The most progressive parts of Potomac are the south and east. The east is more "new-agey". The west tends to be more traditional and conservative, and the north is just full of shits. |
You mean north "Potomac," or what used to be Germantown? |
|
PP, meant to include Potomac.
To the poster who asked about good neighborhoods in Potomac, depends on your price range. As others have noted, the the price range varies significantly among neighborhoods. |
