This is what bothers me too. I wouldn't have as much of a problem paying in if I knew I would also be getting back at some point. Given that I won't retire for 35 more years, it's pretty unlikely that I'll get very much. The system is a mess.

It's frustrating, but I'm not saying we should stop paying for all of the old people. We can't exactly take away their benefits out of nowhere . . . but yes, not pleased to be paying more for something that I'll probably never get the benefit of.

Agree, social security in particular isn't going anywhere. Fixing the financing of it really isn't that difficult.

Medicare is in a much dicier position.

Medicare is the worst in terms of cost. It covers the most expensive group...old people. Those old people vote anyone out who messes with it because they know they could not afford on their own. At the same time they scream about Obamacare.

We have Medicare for precisely this reason. Incidentally, this is why the whole voucher proposal was as dumb as shit -- give an elderly person a voucher and tell them to buy insurance on the open market? What a fucking joke.

Access to health care should be a fundamental human right, not treated a valuable commodity. It's a public good and should be controlled by government as all public goods are.
