Missing school in 3rd grade AAP due to vacations... ...

You dont need permission from fcps to take a trip. do what you want, DD is your child!

In 3rd grade AAP it's not a big deal. DC was sick quite a lot in 3 rd grade AAP (days at a time) and still did well. Even if the teacher doesn't give you the work, ask a friend to scan a copy of the homework for you and make sue you go over it with DC when you get back. I wouldn't mind doing that for one of DC' s friends. Once you get to middle school and grades start to matter more so missing a quiz that can't be made up makes a difference, then I'd start worrying. For elementary school my only concern is whether DC really understands what they are covering in class. If your DC misses class, I'm sure you can find some worksheets or a workbook online to help fill in the gap. The truancy notification after 5 absences is a different issue that you need to look into. Can't comment on that as all of DC's absences were excused. Good luck and have fun on your vacation.

Honestly, I don't like OP because I am jealous that I can't afford to take my kids on amazing trips. I can't even fathom buying plane tickets for our family to fly to freakin' new zealand!

These are great vacations and even if they weren't- you can decide what to do with your kids and how these vacations are enrichment either in cultural, sports, family.

This thread is hilarious. Both schools my kids are in (both AAP centers) send out emails reminding parents to please call the attendance line if the kids won't be in school the week of Thanksgiving, etc. Kids are out ALL THE TIME for trips--one kid last year missed the first 4 days of school because he was in Africa. One kid this year (4th grade AAP) missed the entire week before Christmas and the entire week after new years to be in India for 4 weeks! If you call in you are not truant. Your kid will be fine.

So if a poor person can't get their kid to school shame on them but if you are rich it's OK.

Incorrect. Calling in with the reason of a trip, still makes it an I excused absence.

Don't say u are on a trip. Just call in and say KID won't be in today. I never give the reason when my kid is out, even if my child is sick. I just say X won't be in Mrs Ys class today.

I applaud you for taking your child out and about - we do the same whenever we get the chance. That said, we've never had to write reports when we've missed a few days of school due to travel. Whether it's Disney or a trip to the mountains, we just go and relax and enjoy. Some teachers will give you the work ahead of time, and some won't. Some will require you to write stuff, and some won't. Some might even tell you to go and have fun and not worry about anything. My oldest missed more days than that one year from the flu, so it happens for a variety of reasons.

Other posters are correct though - in middle school it gets tricky. We missed the first three days back from winter break last year and my kid missed a quiz in math that he was not allowed to make up. The classwork in history was also not allowed to be made up, so two classes got dinged, but life went on.

We did it every single year without a problem. we did not tell the teachers in advance, or we did depending on the teacher. Once you get to HS this is impossible, so take your vacations now. Best decision ever. Summer did not work for us due to high prices, our needs and work needs. We go to the beach in the summer.

And then kid returns to school saying "just got back from New Zealand" and I bet the teacher and principal would be more likely to make a big deal out of it than if you were honest upfront

Why would they make a big deal? No law was broken and no lie was told. I just say X won't be in today.I never give a reason - no law says you must. If I am wrong, please provide actual state or federal law that states otherwise.

It's harder when you are calling for multiple days to not say why. It might be hard for OP to make daily calls from New Zealand.

I think you're wrong about this. State law requires school age kids to be in school (or homeschooled) unless they have an excused absence. Otherwise they are truant.
