I received an email today that our very wealthy private collected 300 for teacher/ assistant. |
My son's teacher got 2 gift cards to her favorite restaurant and clothing store totally $100. I thought they were very nice gifts. The room parents collected money at the beginning of the year. The $ goes to the 4 class parties throughout the year and a Christmas and birthday gift for the teacher. I am also a teacher and I don't get anything from my students so I think $100 is very generous. |
I teach elementary school in MCPS and received nowhere even close to $30 total in gifts. For most teachers, we don't care whether or not we get gifts. It's our jobs to teach your children. My favorite gifts are ALWAYS the notes from the kids and/or their families. Those notes are always great to re-read on the tougher days. Happy Holidays everyone! |
+100 Thank you |
I hope your parents and students appreciate you. I think it's nice to show appreciation especially during the holidays. Happy Holidays to you!! |

In several local counties, you aren't supposed to request for group gifts and gifts shouldn't be more than $25. However, it isn't consistently enforced. |
$100 from a class of 20 kids is probably on the low end, pp. Don't be so dense. |
Parent's gave what they could. It is what it is. |
+1! This can't be said enough. If the rules were universally enforced, threads like this would be unnecessary. |
No cash gift here. |
Yes, it's skimpy. |
Room parent here. We collect for the class parties and gifts at the beginning of the year. In a class with 23 kids, we collected about $450 (we suggest $25/child but appreciate any amount). That $450 covers Halloween party, Valentine's day party, holiday gift, b-day gift, teacher appreciation week, and end of year gift. We gave $100 to the teacher for the holiday gift. As room parent I have already contributed about $75 plus hours of my time for the party and the class phone/address list. We will spend every bit and probably more before the end of the year. Our PTA suggests a $25 contribution request so our total kitty is only going to be about $600 at best.
My kids attend a public school in MoCo. Teachers are not going make it or break it on the holiday gift. The purpose is a small gesture of appreciation and good wishes. |
They should get food stamps. Maybe then the powers that be will pay them a more fitting salary. |
This is all crazy talk. I went to school in Bethesda, MD and no class of mine EVER gave the teacher $100 much less $1. This was the 70s.
My wife is also a teacher (not MCPS, but elsewhere), and although her and I enjoy the starbucks cards for the life of me I don't know why you all are doing this. If you give to get, you usually get gotten. Please make sure that you're doing this from the heart to show genuine appreciation. |
