He has something to bring to the table that isn't obvious, as others have said, it's likely some time of security. Emotional, financial (family wealth), social, physical, etc. Many gorgeous women feel insecure about being judged as lesser than and do marry men like this (Padma Lakshmi and Salman Rushdie, for example).

wow you are nasty-not everyone gives a shit about looks/status and can look at the bigger picture-how will he treat me? our parents? our children? I married a "nerd" and I am the one that comes from money, not him. He does well now but not when we first met.

I'm pretty sure I married up on the attractiveness scale when I married DH. I'm not bad looking at all, but I don't often get dolled up anymore. When I get dolled up I am quite pretty and for whatever reasons have always dated smart, good looking guys. My DH could probably model. But, he's also incredibly loving, kind, smart, patient, goofy, can cook like you wouldnt believe, and saw that I had more substance than most of the girls he had previously dated. He does usually treat me like a queen, and honestly, I'm the one that could stand to learn from him about how to treat a partner.
