Conservative families at GDS

DS attends GDS because it a great school for him.
He chose the school for reasons other than politics--academics, atmosphere and general opportunity. We are conservative, but that may not apply to DS. He's in a school where he can stretch during an age where he should stretch.

What other schools did he consider?

You have to travel east to the Eastern Shore, north to Pennsylvania, west to Frederick and south to Fredericksburg. This area is the third largest liberal zone in the country behind the Greenwich Village and San Francisco and the schools here reflect a strong strain of Liberalism. The only school that is even close to being balanced are STA and NCS.

Damn straight there are.

I voted for Romney, McCain, Bush, Bush.... back to Reagan. Strongly pro-choice and for traditional marriage. Think Obama is an insufferable condescending elitist lazy incompetent opportunist. Live in the heart of NW. Kids are or were at 2 different NW independent schools, one with reputation of being extremely progressive. No problem or contradiction in my mind at all.

But I'm always amused at the many narrow-minded parents (like you) that I run into at these schools, who just assume that everyone is so "liberal."

DH and I have moderate political views, but consider ourselves to be more "traditional" or "conservative" than others when it comes to some parenting and schooling beliefs. DS wanted to look at GDS- we decided to go in and look at it with a fresh look. Academically, it seems like it could be a great fit, but philosophically more difficult. DS will apply, but depending on where he gets in probably won't be our choice ... however, it is NOT about there being or not being like minded kids/parents, but more about how the school is run.

I'm happy to see that you take your hat off for the national anthem. Been to a baseball game lately? Most people don't take their hats off. I said that this makes us "traditional. I didn't equate it with a political or social belief.

Just trying to give people an accurate description of our family. We are charitable, accepting and free thinkers. I especially appreciate the pp's comments about GDS being tolerant of everything but Conservative politics. We value diversity in all things in our house including diversity of thought.

I'm PP and I'm not "traditional," thats my point. I have a tattoo (I'm a woman, if that matters) and support marriage equality and believe that people can be too rich. I am also deeply religious and take my hat off during the national anthem because I believe in unifying rituals and I love my country. My point is that you are making assumptions about ways in which you are different that may not hold up and may get in the way of making friends in any new school. PLus if your DH goes in equating Barack Obama with Fidel Castro, he won't be liked and it won't be because he's conservative, it will be because he's insulting and ridiculously reductionist.

Just for kicks and grins, why don't you tell us what "too rich" is, in your view. Is it anyone who makes more money than you do, in your low-paying, but oh-so-good-for society, little job?

And you would have a hissy fit if the people you voted for were described with the adjectives you used for Obama.

Damn straight!

Strongly pro-choice and conservative are incompatible notions. Also, what is "traditional" marriage? You mean, like, you oppose interracial marriage?

PP Here,

The above was a facetious comment. As a conservative in MoCo, I am and feel like I am in the minority and actually can't think of a conservative in my neighborhood. I don't walk around with a conservative sign stuck to my chest but my neighbors have all identified themselves to me as liberal leaning or very liberal.
