If you back into parking spaces

Either they never learned to parallel park or the space is just too damn small. If you try and pull into a space and there's not enough room, your back will stick out into the street and might get hit, then you have to back out into the street creating a mess!

Back to driver's ed for some of you!

I think you are confused between reversing into a parking space and parallel parking.
Yes, you're right. However, if you can parallel park, you should be able to back that car into a spot jack flash. I guess with years of driving experience under my belt, I just know what will work (back in) and what doesn't.

In DC, diagonal parking is back in only. Two reasons...1) puts the driver's line of sight closest to the on-coming traffic when exiting, and 2) when the cars doors are open there is little opportunity for a child to run past into the street.

This Seinfeld clip is about parallel parking but highlights the problem of jockeying for spots when some folks pull in and others back in.

Not OP, but I've always been curious about parking space backer-inners. I just can't wrap my head around how it is "easier" to park that way. I don't doubt that is true for some, but I'm such a horrid driver that the mere thought of trying to back into a space makes me panic.

When I have to wait for someone doing this, I always think to myself "They need to be prepared for a quick getaway, maybe they are going to rob a bank!" It makes me smile, so I don't get annoyed.

Bigger things in life to worry about . . .

We're always either waiting for someone to back in or waiting for someone to back out. It doesn't bother me.

What does bother me? Someone waiting for my parking space when there is another space quite literally 20 feet away.

I love watching people try to load their groceries into the rear of the car after they backed in. Particularly at Costco.

Because you are more likely to hit someone, either a pedestrian or another car. You have way too many blind spots when you back out.

There are exactly the same number of blind spots backing into a parking space as backing out, and there is a lot more space backing out than backing in. It's simple math.

YES!!!

I can't believe there are four pages of debate on this topic.

Town I grew up in in near Boston... by law you had to back into a parking space.

Seems to be common in New England, parts of RI I used to summer in required back-in parking. Of course people there know how to drive, so it was never a problem.

There are many blindspots also when reversing in.

Its not like you have a bunch of cars passing you by anyways, blindsport are a non-issue if you know how to use your mirrors. Blind sport is bigger issue when you back out.

Duh. But nothing behind you is moving at this point. No one is walking behind you on a cell phone. No little kid has run ahead from mom or dad. No car is driving behind you. See? So if you can actually do a decent job the first time of backing in (I can and parallel park well too!) you have ZERO blind spots pulling out while all the activity is going on in front of you!

p.s. If you don't like it...don't do it! Too each his/her own.

No, those are better drivers. Myself and DW always back in if situation permits, using inside and side mirrors only, no back up cameras or anything

If you have a taller SUV and it is not new (with the camera and beeping) you will not be able to see a small child walking directly behind your vehicle. Little ones are not always holding the hand of a parent / babysittter/nanny and walking right next to person. Esp. if there is more than 1 child. I love the back-up features of a newer vehicle, but before I had these I almost always backed in crowded lots.
