| Why isn't your stepson working at your company? Sounds like a great opportunity. |
| My parents paid for everything all thru college. I intend to do the same for my kids. |
Very good question. The kid is a comp sci major. You would think he would want to work in an IT company. In short, his mom won't let him. I know...but that's a battle between his mom, his dad, and him. The really sad part about it is that now, while he's still in college, I can help him. He's on an equal playing field with his peers. When he graduates with zero job experience, I won't be able to help him. How can I justify giving a position to a kid with no experience over a kid who has been working for me for a number of years and has already proven him/herself? And what's worse is that my question is going to be asked by every employer he applies to who also has applications from college students with real work experience. |
Do mom, dad and kid understand this? What a shame. |
Dad gets it but chooses to not get involved with the decisions that his ex wife and son make. My step son goes home to his mom during the summer for breaks so I guess his mom still dictates his life. Yes, it's a shame. But it's not an arguement I'm willing to have in my marriage. |
| I agree with you 100%. But what a wasted opportunity! |
100% agree. If you have the means this is what you should do. Kids should also work in the summer. The two are not mutually exclusive. |
But isn't CS different from IT? |
Yes, but my IT company focuses on building and designing software applications as well as systems engineering. |
| Does anyone plan to give their college bound DC a credit card for emergencies? If so, how will you manage control and not have it used for other purposes? |
Ours has one. He knows we see all the charges. We explained that its for emergencies only and he needs to tell us when he's using it. In 2 yrs, he's never used it. We told him if we started seeing charges from non emergencies that we would take the card away and he would have to pay the bill. |
| Thanks for your reply. DH thinks that there are some expenses that can only be paid with a credit card. Have you found this to be true? Does your son call you for permission for those items? |
| On another note, does your college kid have a Netflix account linked to this credit card? May seem like a ridiculous question, but DH thinks Netflix is reasonable to have in college and I'm fishing here for confirmation that it's not! |
My kids are absolute screen addicts. I would be afraid to have this. Grades would plummet, I'm sure. |
Nope. Can't imagine what this would be. Anything at school can be paid for by his school card...we put a certain amount of money on it and he can use that for things like books or a meal out at the campus restaurant. I take him to target at the beginning of the year for school/dorm room supplies and then I replenish at winter break. |
