How much do you spend on summer vacations?

.
We have a 32 foot sailboat that will sleep all of us. We take a couple of longer cruises over the summer just to get away. We'll sail down the coast and anchor at different marinas along the way then sail back home. Just like camping, only on the water.

That's pov.

Family of four: About $1,500 for Puerto Rico for about a week, staying with friend who provides not only lodging but transportation and food. We reciprocate when she comes visit us.

Then about $2,500 to go to Germany to visit in-laws. That's for the award ticket fees, cheap apartment rental, train rides, incidentals and food.

Wow, how old are the kids. I hope they are old enough to appreciate and remember it. Sounds nice.

That is an insanely expensive safari - the full luxury version for people who have extra money to spend. If you aren't millionaires with money to burn you can go on fantastic safaris for a fraction of that price. Kids are mostly going to remember the animals and the safari experience and those are the same whether you pay $3k or 60K. I am guessing though that anyone paying $60K is used to a life of pure luxury and the kids might complain if the sheets aren't a high enough thread count or their every need and want isn't automatically met.

We do a trip to the OBX. About 5k for the rental house and 1k for food and gas. We tend to spend most of our travel money for winter trips (typically 2 to somewhere warm).

No 60k makes sense. At first I thought it said 600k. And I was like, shit you could build a house there for that, lol. But yeah 60k for four people makes sense. DH and I went to on one to Kenya before we had kids and it was about 22k per person.

It makes sense for an insanely expensive safari. Similar to the family who spent 40K for a week in the Caribbean. We did a 6 day safari for less than 3K per person including airfare. We arranged it ourselves - not through an agency. It was absolutely fantastic with great food, an excellent and experienced guide, but in more budget level accommodations.

Whew. I am really happy to hear that. I would like to keep the dream alive that I could afford a safari some day.

We did one in South Africa and it was $600/per person per day all inclusive and relatively high end. So for a family of 4 that would be $2400/day. Airfare was extra of course. So $60k might be a little high but I can easily see getting to $40k for 4.

Sorry to hijack, but would you be willing to share the details of what you arranged in case someone wanted to recreate your trip?

Safari is definitely on our family's travel wish list (someday . . . ), and our budget will be much closer to yours than to the $60k poster. Thanks!
