Too focused on competitive sports around here

Well up here in NW DC kids play in the street, in the alleys, in the park and in their backyards all the time - you'd think we were in Mayberry. My kids all play competitive sports as well, but it's not nearly as intense here compared to placed where there is just nothing else going on. I have friends in Kentucky, Indiana and Arizona and their children are all pushed to do competitive sports to the exclusion of everything else.

I live in NWDC too and my kids play hoops on our street with neighborhood kids all the time. Most of them go to different private schools but they all get toegther at the basketball hoop on our street and play together, all ages, boys and girls. Every single one of them plays some kind of organized sport as well, including on some really elite travel teams but, they also still play basketball in the street just like I did in suburbia in the 80s.

once again, lived in chicago suburbs, dc and now boston and it is identical-sign of the times

I am a from a military family and disagree. This area is by far the worst.

seriously? where the hell have you lived? Under a rock secluded on a base?

So you think DC Metro has a nice balance and that others who have lived elsewhere are not in a position to state their opinion?
I'm not the person quoted that says they are from a military family, but I grew up a military brat with a younger brother who played sports through high school and I now have 2 boys that both play travel level sports. I've lived overseas, in the midwest and way up north. I think this area has the same balance as other places I've lived. I dont see this area is noticeably different than other areas I've lived.
