Said neighbor walked around looking in windows: was anything said to him? Nope. We were told to close our curtains.

Truthfully, the church did nothing less than the rest of society.

This is very powerful and true. Sadly, many people are obsessed with blaming only one institution rather than solving the problem and changing societal attitudes overall.

I don't necessarily agree with you but the "rest of society" isn't professing to speak for God like the Catholic church does. "The rest of society" isn't trying to convince us that it holds some moral majority and that we should follow it's rules because it is governed by the Holy Spirit. People hold the church to higher standards than the rest of society because the church DEMANDS THAT WE DO.

But I can't convince you.

This times 1000.

I think it's particularly curious where Ratzinger, and now the Argentinian are defended by saying, "Well, they were no worse than most in their society at their time." Talk about setting a low bar. Meanwhile, the priests who were tortured or killed for actually behaving like Christians never have a chance in Hell of getting promoted. It's like the normal moral order of things is completely inverted.

The church went even further. They used the power of priests' positions in the lives of people to prey upon their fear of God and going to hell, they used that, to molest children. I mean, crap, one guy was abusing children in a confessional. If that's not something just a little bit extra I don't know what is.

It's unfortunate that being gay is viewed as something sinful by the church. Can you imagine serving an organization that hates you?
I guess this need for secrecy combined with their power/trust is the perfect storm and these gay priests end up molesting children.
I don't think all priests are gay and even some that are resist molesting children and are either celebate or date men on the side.
The church needs to change it's policy and come clean.
