I know, right? All that infanticide, incest, and rape...just good, old-fashioned values.

Where was there incest in the book? I don't remember any, but of course it was in college that I read it.

Maybe it's because the slave owners would rape everyone?

Thiese statements are referring to the Bible, not the book in the article.

the bible is banned too

Wouldn't the kids have gotten a syllabus at the beginning of the class, which the parents could review to see if any books were contrary to their family's sensibilities?

Reminds me of an incident two years ago at my old high school in Indiana. A parent complained to the school board about Toni Morrison's Song of Solomon. A board member that I grew up with called the book 'trash' and that he disagreed with the board's decision to allow the book to continue to be taught. http://www.educationalconsultingva.com/ . There aren't as many articles on line about now as there were when this was a hot topic but Scott Veerkamp (the board member I grew up with) later admitted he'd never read the book but he couldn't imagine why a book advocating suicide would ever be used in the school and that there wasn't any value in the book. I can tell you the Scott Veerkamp I knew growing up coudn't have passed an AP class. He seems just as willfully ignorant now as he was back then. I still can't believe I grew up with people like him. (BTW - I actually know people who appeared on the Jerry Springer show. Guess that tells you the kind of people I grew up with).

Yes, but Shakespeake taught in middle school? No problem with that, right?

Nothing like good old fashioned multiple stabbing...

Critics (mostly parents) cite the novel's treatment of bestiality, infanticide, racism, and sex as inappropriate for underage readers. As recently as 2007 and 2008, Beloved was pulled from library shelves in Kentucky, Idaho, and Illinois by concerned parents and school boards.

"Concerned parents" can worry about their own damn children and let me make my own decisions for my kid. I have not read this book and so don't have an opinion on its propriety for my kid. But, I do NOT need someone do dictate that decision to me.

I find her actions repulsive.

Please read the book and then share your thoughts. Thanks.

Whether I've read the book is entirely irrelevant. I reserve the right to decide for myself and my child what is going to be read. You don't get to make that decision for me. And for the record, I've read plenty of violent, erotic, inappropriate books that I would not let my child read. That doesn't mean I'm going to dictate what others are ok with. The same goes for movies and tv shows.

Yet you're certain that this mom's action are "repulsive"? Based on what personal knowledge?

"Infanticide, incest, and rape" poster, here. I was commenting on 16:32's humorous remark which was a reference to the Bible.

Based on her actions and the fact that she's trying to control what I read and my kids read. That's not her decision to make. She should mind her own house and reading habits. That she is trying to decide mine, I find repulsive. Thankfully, it looks like her request is not going anywhere.

I get you don't agree with me. That's just fine.

OMG, I read Beloved as a Junior in high school in an AP English class. There is no reason a 17 year old should not be able to handle to this novel. Yes, it raises many disturbing issues but we can not shield 17 years old from the realities of life!

I would not be surprised to find that this mom homeschooled her 4 kids until they hit junior year. The boy sounds, well, sheltered.

I've never been called the voice of reason before. I'm humbled

I was just calling it as I saw it. And I agree with the previous poster who said she likely homeschooled until HS.
