I find this disgusting. Talk about helicopter parenting!!

Oh, boy, dude is a senior. That's embarassing. |
1. The "beastiality" is something that's mentioned in passing, not an actual scene in the book.
2. I'm a bit confused at calling this "banning." Doesn't the mom just want it not to be mandatory for any kid to read it? She isn't suggesting removing it from the library, right? |
Her 17 year old kid had nightmares after reading a book? Gimme a break! I read The Telltale Heart by Poe in 8th grade and lived to tell. I hope they tell her to take a long walk off a short pier. |
Lord of the Flies in 10th grade gave me nightmares, too. But I never thought about banning it. |
I heard the book was overly exaggerated attempt to point out how bad slavery was. |
It gets banned because its subject matter is difficult (really difficult) to read. Critics (mostly parents) cite the novel's treatment of bestiality, infanticide, racism, and sex as inappropriate for underage readers. As recently as 2007 and 2008, Beloved was pulled from library shelves in Kentucky, Idaho, and Illinois by concerned parents and school boards. |
Let me point out that this was an AP class. When you sign up for an AP class, the idea is that you are studying college level material. Indeed, many colleges will give you credit for the class if you score well on the AP exam.
A 17-18 year old senior taking a COLLEGE LEVEL English class should be able to handle Beloved. If he can't then that is his problem. |
I don't think there's any "over exaggerating" how bad slavery was. You think gang rape, infant murder, and bestiality didn't happen? |
It may be controversial, but it's a class for seniors; 17 & 18 year olds! These kids can get married and join the military without parental consent. Pretty soon she will be trying to ban books in college. It is a few short months away. |
Actually, dude is in college and still whining about his nightmares. Any wonder with that mom? |
daga-daga-daga
(that's the noise my 2 year old makes when he hears helicopters) i think this is absurd and OFFENSIVE. that woman is an idiot. its BELOVED, for heaven's sake. |
According to the article, it is already optional: "Currently, students can opt out of books assigned in class that they find uncomfortable to read. But the policy should be stricter for books with mature themes, Murphy said." She has asked for an outright ban on a book in a college-level AP class, when there was already a mechanism in place that would have allowed her child to opt out of reading it. She feels this policy doesn't do enough to "protect" children, although I haven't found anything stating what she would define as a reasonable policy. As for me, it sounds like the current one is just fine. |
Lady grow up!
It's a class for Advanced Students--- if he cannot handle the material DON'T READ IT...DON'T GO TO COLLEGE...DON'T LEARN ABOUT SLAVERY....because yea...THIS STUFF HAPPENED FOR REAL..AND MUCH WORSE...this just happens to be a fictionalized account...guess he shouldn't read anything about the Holocause either...sheesh... Seems like this would be a great jumping off point for discussion...especially about the horrors of the Holocaust of slavery...the role of art illuminating and illustrating things that happen in life...how and why things make you feel uncomfortable reading it or hearing about it... geez... |
Oh, For Effs Sake. Just because your kid is a pussy you want a book banned for all?
