It's simple-- just put them in order of your preference. Your top school choice should be listed #1, and so on.

To 12:07, I think that SWS will only have Preschool, Pre-K, and K next year. The year after that they'll add 1st grade, then the year after that they'll add 2nd grade, etc.

SWS currently has Pre-K, K and 1st grade.

For school year 2013-14, SWS will have PreS, PreK, K, 1 and 2.

Over the next several school years, SWS will add a grade so that it will eventually be a PreS through 5th grade school at Prospect.

SWS already has 1st grade this school year and will be adding 2nd grade next year 13/14. They're also adding PS3 for 13/14

PreS3 (we just want a Hill spot somewhere before K)

Brent (IB, 38 or so spots, maybe 55-60 applicants this year)
Tyler Traditional (some OOB slots, but will only go with one of the teachers if offered a spot, the other screams a lot)
JO Wilson (a good many OOB spots and more middle-class friendly all the time)
Tyler Spanish Immersion (not very interested in the Spanish, already use two languages at home but good peer group)
Seaton (maybe be some middle-class NoVA families this year)
Payne (no OOB spots before mid Sept. last year, but then several opened up)

Super active kid not a good fit for Logan Montessori and SWS seemed like a really long shot and wasted spot. Rumor has it that there will be 400+ applicants for 15-18 PreS3 slots.

If you get a spot at Tyler traditional, how in the world will you know which teacher you'll have? At the same time, your child will not be on a waitlist for any of the picks below (#3-6).

Just to clarify Seaton is not on the Hill. It's in Shaw and serves a neighborhood that was redistricted into Ward 6.

Visit a school after enrolling and and ask a top administrator to put your kid in a good teacher's class. Bring a letter requesting this teacher, cc'd to every administrator likely to be involved in class assignments. They'll tell you that parents can't/don't pick teachers. You politely make it clear that if your child isn't assigned said good teacher, that's the end of your relationship with the school for preschool. Generally, a school seeking to boost middle-class enrollment, like Tyler Traditional, will play ball, without admitting as much. But you'd better have a back-up plan if they won't, perhaps at a charter, private preschool or au pair agency. You do what you must to make things work for your kid. Much better than pulling out in the course of the school year with no fallback position after a bad teacher hasn't worked out (hint: this happens at Tyler Traditional).

I don't believe they are, but don't forget that there is no (current) PS3 program. So all 40 slots are (theoretically) open. I don't know how many will be claimed by siblings of current students.
