Yes, but I'm guessing the PP is suprised that soneone who can't be older than in his/her mid-20s reads the "Older Kids" board on DCUM. |
Not necessarily. There's lots that history can teach about conservation. Many groups only hunted what they needed. Deforestation has depopulated natural predators and given rise to the over population of animals like deer, which live on the edges not in deep forests. Hence everything is an "edge" and there are few forests. People grew and preserved food--no massive carbon foot print with flying food in from across the globe or refrigeration costs. Crop rotation help renew soil. Basic building practices took advantage of natural phenomena, like digging cellars to keep food cool. Pretty much all parts of the animal were used--tanned hides, spun yarn, made their own clothes. Didn't rely on sweatshops. (A civics lesson comes into play--slaves used to be permitted legally; now people are virtually slaves/indentured servants.) |
| I was totally into tornados around that age. The library had a book called "Tornado!" that I checked out over and over and over. (FWIW we lived somewhere that never ever got tornados.) |
| My son has been obsessed with the Titanic since he was about 2. He says he was on it. Knew facts about the Titanic no other 2year old at the time would have known. He is now 5and still obsessed with it. Remembers more about (a past life) on the Titanic, such as his name the fact he died in the cold water. |
If they died, they all pretty much died in cold water. |
| One of the characters in a "Mom-Lit" author Liane Moriarty books has a daughter first obsessed with Titanic and then moves onto Berlin Wall -- so it's clearly a thing. |

The best Titanic movie is "A Night to Remember." No mushy stuff for a 6 yr old.
There is also an excellent book, "Good as Gold" by Louise Patten who is granddaughter of Charles Lightoller. The book is fiction but at the end She brings in new info about the Titanic. Congratulations on your budding historian! |

My 6 year old son has been obbsessed with the Titanic and everything about since he was 3 years old! He needs to talk about it all the time. He has many books puzzles and toys relating to it. He talks about the real ship not the movie and is huge into talking about how it sank and that the movie was wrong in alot of it. It is mind blowing when a 3 year old talks to you about a tragic moment in history. I still cant understand how he knew some of the stuff at 3

| My DS went through this stage. there are at least four other Titanic movies, such as "A Night to Remember" mentioned above. We worked through all of them. Then we moved on to the Hindenburg disaster. |
| I couldn't believe it when I saw this thread. My 5 year old makes me read a graphic book about the Titanic at least once a week! I'm glad to know he is not the only one! |

Since you asked about other interesting little fixations, OP, my four year-old has been obsessed with water towers for a year. His grandparents are handy enough to have built him half a dozen little water towers for towns he likes, made from plumbing pipes and fittings. He's branched out into high-tension power lines, electricity and alternative energy now. I've learned so much.
To the person who wants her son to have a better grasp on environmentalism-- it starts in the backyard, or front yard, or terrace. Gardeners know as well as anyone about how the weather pattern has changed. Gardening and appreciation for pollinators and birds, etc., all go together. Start there. |
| My kids are very interested in the Titanic, but their tragic historical event preference is Pompeii. We read everything about Pompeii, multiple times in a row. They can't get enough. |
There’s a great six-book series of The Odyssey for kids by the author of the Magic Tree House books. My kid loved me reading them to him at age 6 (though I found them gory). He’s 8 now & finishing up the first Percy Jackson book, which he LOVES. |
| My 5 year old (he’ll be 6 in a couple of weeks) is also obsessed with the Titanic. I think he obsessed about it after we watched the movie, but then he started reading all the Titanic school aged books from his Epic reading app and sings the weird song, Sleeping Sun, not even the Celine Dion song....which is less odd. And he knows all the words and all the fun facts about The Titanic...and Frederick Fleet, the lookout guy. It’s so strange, should I be concerned? He turned his Peppa Pig house into the Titanic and turned it on the side with all the household items falling out, like the Titanic. It’s really funny. He was obsessed with the Anaheim Angels when he as like 2 years old, then High School musical at 3, then the Anaheim Ducks at 4, then the Golden Gate Bridge for a little while and then Ryan’s World, Thomas the Train, Paw Patrol, PJ Mask, Peppa Pig, etc...so most of those things seem normal, but Titanic has been strange. Lol. |
Was also 7 when it came out. I'll be 30 next month. |
