Okay - What do you like about Maryland?

As a native of Baltimore, I think its funny how many "favorite Maryland things" are in and around Baltimore. My hometown usually gets a bad rap on this forum so I'm glad to see that people are finally seeing all of the charm in Charm City. Now, if we can just get people to stop picking on Ocean City (I know, its trashy, but for those of us who grew up here, its a representation of childhood fun so just let us have it and go to Rehobeth and Bethany if you're too good for OC).

And as a UMD and JHU alum, I don't think its fair to say that all Maryland colleges suck. But, I will admit that as a whole, I think Virginia has it over Maryland when it comes to the value of their in-state schools.

We are natives of Baltimore as well. Glad to see someone not trashing OC. We go there every year for a family vacation. And have a great time!

I like that the services I receive for my taxes are visible, reliable and useful -- 2x/week garbage pickup, weekly non-sorted recycling (including almost every kind of plastic), weekly yard waste pickup and monthly bulk trash pickup from the end of my drive. And the snowplows get us dug out very quickly. Right-of-way trees are regularly trimmed and potholes repaired quickly. Overall, it just feels like systems work here. Oh, and in MoCo we have such a large population that we only get called for jury duty every seven years or so. And my final "and" -- the taco trucks parked outside of the DMV in Gaithersburg sell the best tacos I've tasted in the area.

The season is basically whenever it's relatively warm and there isn't snow or wet leaves on the tracks - so now is good! I've seen it run in early November and it was running last weekend.

The Cabin John train runs weekends only for a while before/after running on a daily basis. I think it's running weekends only now.

Here's their website/schedule:

I've lived in DC, VA and MD. I can't think of much that I liked about NoVa (other than many really nice people who live there). I loved living in DC and I love MD. I love that you don't have to cross a bridge to get into DC. For me, it makes MoCo feel more integrated with the city. If you don't know that Western Ave is the DC/MD border, you wouldn't know when you've left DC or entered MD. Maryland also feels more urban and more sophisticated.

Born in Hampton Roads are of Va, lived in NoVa for 6-7 years, lived in DC one year and have been in MD for 7 years. I much prefer MD to NoVa. There are great people in all areas of course, but it was so nice to finally move to a blue state after years of being in a red one given my political beliefs. I also think the traffic is much better than NoVa and would take 495 over 66 any day. My neighbors are the nicest I have ever had in the metro area and the public schools are great where we are (Mo Co). I think it is a beautiful state and we have Silver Spring, Bethesda and downtown right at our fingertips. I am near Rock Creek part and adore how beautiful it all is and the parks as mentioned are great. Capital Crescent trail is also nearby. Overall, I just have found my quality of life to be much better here and there was a time where I would have thought I would have never been a MD convert. But now, I cannot imagine going back to NoVa. The Hampton Roads area still carries some appeal, primarily which is a slower way of life, family and the beach, but I think we are here to stay.

Cruising on the bay in my little sail boat. Tilghman Island! Oxford. Solomons Island. Annapolis. I dream of quitting my job and just cruising around to all these lovely, scenic towns!

After living in DC for 9 years we just bought a house in MD and I can't tell you how excited all these posts make me! All the positives are things I've considered or hadn't thought of till now. Thanks to all of you for the positive posts. Cheers!

Grew up in Montgomery County and now live in PG. I think that in general, the MD suburbs were built up at an earlier time, so have a more charming feel. (although I know there are some nice old neighborhoods in VA too.)

VA seems filled with cocky young IT workers who drive too fast in their fancy little cars.

Likes:

downtown Baltimore, especially the Aquarium, Camden Yards and the restaurants along the inner harbor.

Ft. McHenry

Western MD and the Eastern Shore

Ocean City for real little kids to have fun on the boardwalk

Suburban living with little crime and good schools in Howard County

Dislikes:

PG County has gone to hell

Montgomery County is slipping as well.

High taxes

More difficult commute into DC.

Overall, I prefer Virginia, but if I had to live in a downtown environment I'd much prefer Baltimore over the District.
