Wind Chimes

You say that your neighbor has a cheap sounding wind chime. Apparently they enjoy the sound of a wind chime. Maybe you could recommend they buy a wind chime that is a good quality. There is also the option that you buy them a quality wind chime. There are many musically tuned wind chimes for sale that aren't terribly expensive. Check out our site. chimesin.com[google]

If they are just for decoration is there a way to silence the charms? I mean to place a discrete buffer between the pieces so they look nice but do not make so much noise?

OP here!

UPDATE: The wind chimes are GONE. All is well. Thanks everyone for your help.

Here's the thing OP. Because the chimes were on the neighbors property/side (and not physically hurting anything on your property/side), I was backing them up. But I commend them for "doing the right thing", which most people would not know to do. They are investing in their future relationship with you. Good on them for looking at the big picture.

We had an adult conversation about them and they told me that their teenager daughter was also bothered by the constant ringing. They took them off and they may put them back in the Spring (during the day), but on the downstairs deck. They also have a bird feeder next to the chimes and I guess, it was scaring away the birds.

So, we're still friends.

You give them too much credit. Their daughter complained. Pure self- interest.

OP, I'm glad your situation was resolved. I HATE WIND CHIMES! I'd rather live next door to a barking dog (and as a matter of fact, I do...but that an issue for another post). Wind chimes are unpleasant, they make me think of the movie "twister" and I find them scary when it's about to storm. If one of those MF'ers kept me awake, you'd bet I'd do something about it. While they can hang what they wnat on their property, there are nuisance rules that come into play here. If it's loud enough to keep a neighbor awake, it probably qualifies as noise pollution.

People that put wind chimes up and do not ask neighbors are disrespectful idiots.

It is disturbing your sleep for goodness sake. You have asked politely and they refused.

You have 2 options:

Either remove and destroy them yourself (the wind chimes not the neighbors) or late each night that the chimes disturb you, knock on their door waking them up telling them you cannot sleep. They will soon get fed up with being woken.

Do not let selfish people like this get away with it. You have a right to sleep and they have NO right to invade your silence.

I have five different sets of wind chimes. None of my neighbors mind because I've asked.

Anonymous wrote:We live in a suburban townhouse community and my next door neighbor installed a huge wind chime on his deck over the Holidays. It is driving me crazy and the constant noise is making it difficult to fall asleep and to say asleep. Our bedrooms overlook our deck, so we are pretty much exposed to the wind chime dangling sound all night long. Maybe in time, I will get used to it, but for the past five days, it has really bothered us a lot. Right now, we keep the windows closed and therefore it is not too bad, but I can image how it is going to feel like during Spring when we keep the windows open. I have asked them if they would mind taking the wind chime inside during the night, but they want to keep it outside. I'm not sure what to do. Their bedrooms are on the other side of their house and therefore they cannot hear the dangling noise during the night. I even thought about getting my OWN wind chime and putting it by my front so that they, too, will be exposed to the noise and learn from it, but that is childish. Have to admit though it crossed my mind.... I actually like wind chimes, just not during the night on a windy day. LOL!

You have my sympathy 100%! I found this site because I have the same problem. I purchased a home about a year a go and one neighbor has several chimes, two in particular which are loud. The chimes are about 50 feet away but are loud and I can't have a window open on a windy night to get fresh air or their chimes would wake me up. I've been suffering for months and I know that if I pursue this further, it will create more bad feelings and suspicion. The chimes are so annoying when the winds kick up. When I am on my way home from work I dread getting home if it's a windy day. I have the second larges lot on the street and would love being out in my back yard more, but on a windy day I am out there fuming inside.

Some people say, well an airline flying over head makes noise too - yes, but the airline passes and you have peace and quiet again! The chime just keeps going for hours or days on end! If you can't have peace and quiet within your own four walls, your property is virtually worthless. What good is it?

I did ask them, but they like the way it looks on their deck and they do not want to remove it.

How about sticking some insulation in it so that the sound is muffled, that way they can still hang it and make their deck look pretty, but the noise is lessened.
