| I'm 42 and do rememer the cheese thing and even have heard it used in a racist mocking way. Maybe it's a cultural or demographical thing. |
i'm 39 and its more a socio-economic thing - the free gov'ment/welfare cheese. |
I grew up in the "cheese era" and, in fact, my family would have qualified and I never heard it referred to a racially way. |
I'm Black and grew up in the cheese era. My family would not have qualified in my younger years however we would have at one point when I was an older teen but at that point the program was no longer existent. I have definitely heard racial remarks regarding the government cheese and blacks. Mostly from other Blacks. |

I have hidden half of my friends, including my brother, because I just can't take any of their political ravings, attention-getting statuses, and daily discourses on why their religion is superior any longer. I miss the "Johnny won first prize in his art contest!" posts, because those gave some insight into their lives.
I get that FB is supposed to be a place to connect and reconnect, but any more, I find it a place to be avoided. The way I see it - if they have their freedom of speech, I have my freedom of hiding them. I'll check in again after Thanksgiving. |

Yes, peope are entitled to their opinions; but, there is a fine line between opinion and the desire to hurt others while hiding under one's opinion.
I see no point in hiding "friends" on Facebook. Seriously - why havethem as "friends" if you are going to ignore them? If someone says something nasty and hateful, then I have to think about whether I really want this kind of "friend" in my life. I have many friends on Facebook who have different opinions, but I have unfriended only those who are hateful. They aren't really the kind of people I want to hang out with anyway. OP, I don't think you are being petty if you unfriend your "friend". It will probably be refreshing. |
|
I'm not sure I understand the post - you didn't give that much info.
That said, most (not all) really negative posts about Obama are from people who think they are better than everyone else or who are racist (or both). I usually unfriend them over that alone. Being a Republican is anti woman, homophobic, anti choice. . . I don't have time for people like that. Don't tell me there are Republicans who are not these things because that's the party platform so if they aren't these things - they aren't Republicans. |
I thought it was a reference to the free food from the Great Depression. Never in a million years would I have thought urban poor during the Carter administration. Before you think I am dating myself PP, I am about the same age as you are
|
Right. OP you are not petty being upset with this dumb post. You are petty for considering this concept of unfriending. Could you imagine if Facebook was real life? A friend says something dumb and you say " I hereby unfriend thee" |
Yeah. Even worse (in a way) is that huge mounds of it were pushed on my grandmother's swank retirement community. I think there was maple syrup, too, and maybe other stuff. But the distribution network was sending it to the wrong people. |
Wasn't the free cheese under Reagan? I don't have a lot of memories of the Carter years (39, too). |
You're not too young. Just unaware. I'm younger than you and knew that since high school. |
